The music in the game has received widespread acclaim for its emotional depth and seamless integration with gameplay, primarily composed by Christopher Larkin, known for his work on Hollow Knight. Reviewers highlight the dynamic and adaptive nature of the soundtrack, which enhances the gaming experience by evolving with the action and creating a calming yet engaging atmosphere. While some critiques mention moments where the music feels out of place, the overall consensus is that the soundtrack significantly elevates the game's artistic expression and emotional impact.
“Christopher Larkin really made some amazing, emotional, delicate, and rich music for this game.”
“The music changes dynamically based on the stage of the levels, which is always lovely to see.”
“The soundtrack is very emotional, and I love the transitions between the levels!”
“The music sounds cliched and tries to be overly dramatic and epic, which doesn't really bring excitement or intrigue to a square walking in 4 directions.”
“Sure the music is fine, but it's nothing special and there are no sound puzzles or even important sound effects.”
“Often I had to turn off the music to beat one level.”
Expand Review
A unique game that's visually distinctive and at times quite beautiful, but it suffers from a little unevenness in some levels which distract from the meditative experience it has been pitched as.

Despite falling on the shorter side of indie titles, Expand manages to stand out as a fascinating take on puzzles and mazes. By relying on a mix of patient gameplay and non-stop movement, each puzzle requires as much thought as it does technical skill. Not every puzzle is a hit, with a few standing out as little more than frustrating, but the majority of the experience is very well done thanks in large part to the colour scheme and soundtrack. Expand would have certainly benefitted from a few more great puzzles to balance out the tedious ones, but it's an overall pleasant experience with a genuinely introspective atmosphere.

Expand is a great puzzle game. Navigating your square through monochromatic mazes offers a wonderfully relaxing experience that somehow manages to be calming and wrought with tension throughout. While it’s a relatively short title, its low price point and high fun factor make it a worthwhile venture. Sure, it may not have been a runaway success on its initial release, but we can only hope this title finds its audience this time around.
