The story in Dead Rising 4 is generally viewed as fun and engaging, with a humorous tone and a continuation from the previous game, though it suffers from a lack of depth and character development. Players appreciate the freedom to explore and complete missions at their own pace, but many find the missions repetitive and disconnected, detracting from the overall narrative experience. While the game offers a variety of content and enjoyable gameplay mechanics, the story itself is often considered shallow and not particularly compelling.

    • “While some players miss the time limit, I actually love the fact that I don't have to rush through the story. I can just wander around and have fun killing zombies, looting stores, and changing outfits.”
    • “It’s a good zombie killing game for buyers that like to kill zombies with different weapons. It has a good story that continues on from Dead Rising 3, and gameplay is good with the ability to move the character all around environments.”
    • “Genuinely funny. A good story that doesn't take itself seriously. Frank West is great, and there is a ton of content with varied and exciting DLC packs.”
    • “Instead of getting to enjoy the main campaign in co-op like previous games in the series, this time you just get a series of repetitive, disconnected missions.”
    • “What this is is just the same story you play in normal mode, but with a twist.”
    • “Most notably, the absence of a deadline to have all the story missions done.”
  • stability8 mentions

Overall, "Dead Rising 4" exhibits a mixed stability experience; while some players report smooth gameplay without significant issues, others highlight persistent bugs and glitches that detract from the enjoyment. Despite these problems, many fans still find the game worth playing.

    • “Bugs and glitches even now in 2019, Capcom has yet to fix any of the bugs that are in this game.”
    • “For example: you might be slashing away at a horde of zombies, and one of the zombies you kill just freezes on their feet.”
    • “The biggest problem with this game is the amount of glitches and bugs it has.”
  • gameplay8 mentions

The gameplay is characterized as over-the-top fun, appealing to those who enjoy a less serious approach to zombie killing, though it suffers from repetitive mechanics and a lack of engaging combat. Players noted that while the environments are navigable and the graphics are solid, the combat can feel stale and unsatisfying, particularly due to weapon durability issues and a lack of variety in enemy design. Overall, the experience is mixed, with some enjoying the chaotic nature of the gameplay while others find it tiresome and lacking depth.

    • “This game is not a 'serious' zombie game like the Dead Island series, but the gameplay is fun in a very over-the-top kind of way.”
    • “I wish the game had a bit more oomph in the shooting mechanic - it would have been great to have a sniper rifle for some aspects of the story, yet melee and even offensive driving parts of the game were more fun than I usually have.”
    • “It's a good zombie-killing game for players who enjoy taking down zombies with different weapons. The gameplay is good, allowing you to move the character all around the environments, and the graphics are just how a PS4 game should look.”
    • “Every zombie looks exactly the same, the world is not even as interactive as in the original title. The gameplay is getting tired, Frank is less interesting this time around, and the plot is standard.”
    • “Annoying voice actor and stale gameplay.”
    • “The gameplay got stale after an hour; you spend more time running past zombies since combat is a chore and the weapons constantly break.”
  • humor4 mentions

The game's humor is characterized by a blend of silliness and genuine comedy, making it an entertaining experience that doesn't take itself too seriously. While some players find the humor detracts from the horror elements, others appreciate the funny moments and creative weapons, contributing to a fun overall atmosphere. The inclusion of varied content and engaging DLC packs further enhances the comedic experience.

    • “If you like the idea of a 'funny' zombie game (actually it's pretty silly at times) that can still challenge you a bit, then this game is worth checking out.”
    • “Genuinely funny. A good story that doesn't take itself seriously. Frank West. A ton of content. Varied and exciting DLC packs. The mini golf mode is a triumph.”
    • “Occasional funny moments, stupid, fun weapons.”
  • graphics3 mentions

The graphics in "Dead Rising 4" are generally praised for their quality, aligning well with expectations for a PS4 title, and the game features a larger sandbox environment that enhances gameplay. However, some users noted minor audio and graphical issues towards the end, and there were mixed feelings about the character design of Frank West. Overall, the visuals contribute positively to the zombie-killing experience.

    • “The thing that swayed me over to 'Dead Rising 4' (besides the worth-a-try price) was the improved graphics, and the game has a much bigger sandbox - you start off in the mall, and later the game progresses to other locations.”
    • “Graphics are good, just how a PS4 game should look like.”
    • “Some audio and graphics issues do hurt the game near the end of it all.”
