About

Dark Home is a multiplayer action game. It was developed by Chris Rickett and was released on July 14, 2021. It received neutral reviews from players.

In "Dark Home," an early access asymmetric multiplayer horror game, players work together to escape a nightmarish realm while one player, as a ghost, hunts them down. The gameplay combines elements from "Dead by Daylight" and "Phasmophobia," offering a unique experience with distinct mechanics for each spirit and potential for engaging strategies. While the maps are currently described as somewhat bare-bones and can be challenging, particularly the poorly lit Coldwood map, the game shows promise for future development and improvement. Overall, players appreciate the responsive development team and the fun potential of the gameplay, despite some early-stage bugs.

    • “If you like Dead by Daylight or Phasmophobia, this game has elements of both with the gameplay of DBD and the atmosphere of Phas.”
    • “This has potential to be something very fun and interesting. It has a very bare-bones DBD kind of vibe to it. I saw this game while browsing, and it was super cheap, so I thought, what's the harm? Honestly, it could be really enjoyable with the spirits each having their own mechanics and gameplay style. It would be cool to see the children have a distraction ability or something to help them escape, as once the killer is on you, that's it!”
    • “Gameplay features some interesting and unique maps that are a little bare-bones but could be fleshed out in the full release. The worst map by far was Coldwood, which was pitch black even with a lamp (which is very temperamental at the best of times and only lights up as far as your feet). This made it unplayable for both the killer and the children, and the dream catchers are very, very hard to find.”

    • “Beautiful atmosphere.”
    • “When it launched, there were some really good reactions and definitely some jump scare moments along with some really good, creepy, atmospheric places.”
  • stability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is currently a significant issue, with users reporting numerous bugs that hinder gameplay. While the underlying concept is promising, many players feel that the game is unplayable in its current state, though they remain hopeful that future updates will improve stability.

    • “This game was gifted to me for free, and I feel bad that my friend had to spend $1.19 plus tax on an unplayable, buggy game.”
    • “I would really love to see this game take off into something great and I hope the creator is not too disheartened and continues to work on this because what is already put in is honestly good; yes, it's buggy but the concept behind it all is intriguing.”
    • “Of course it's new, so it's a little buggy, but nothing time can't fix.”
  • humor
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is highlighted by its quirky visuals, such as the amusing appearance of the little girl on the menu screen and the absurdity of spawning as a head crab. Players find the chaotic interactions with fast-moving alien creatures and the unexpected glitches to be both entertaining and funny, contributing to an overall enjoyable experience. The combination of these elements leads to a hilariously fun gameplay atmosphere that many reviewers appreciate.

    • “10/10 had a hilariously fun time playing and will be following closely.”
    • “The little girl on the front of the game menu screen is funny looking. The game is good because you glitch into stuff, and the game ends and goes back to the menu with the beautiful music after you die. It just goes back to the game over screen; there's no music either in the actual game, only the menu. When the game starts, you start off as a head crab, and that's only if you want to be the monster. It's not like you have a choice because it forces you, but if you are the monster, you spawn out of your body for no reason, and that's cool and funny. The little alien creatures make bug noises and move around fast trying to get you, but it never works. The game is an amazing masterpiece, 10/10.”

The music in the game is described as "beautiful" and adds a humorous touch to the experience, particularly during the menu screen. However, players note that there is no music during actual gameplay, which contrasts with the lively sounds made by the in-game creatures. Overall, while the music enhances the menu experience, its absence in gameplay is a notable point.

    • “The music in the game menu is beautiful and adds a unique charm to the experience.”
    • “The game features a captivating soundtrack that enhances the overall atmosphere.”
    • “The combination of quirky visuals and the delightful music creates an unforgettable gaming experience.”
