Crossing Souls

Crossing Souls is a solid journey into the pixelated past that tells a short but entertaining tale. Still, it has to be stressed that your mileage may vary depending just how much of a soft spot you have for the era the game’s set in. However, if you’re a ’80s fetishist like me, you’re most likely going to really enjoy what developer Fourattic has managed to do here.

  • Beautiful pixel art and hand-drawn animated cutscenes that evoke the 80s Saturday morning cartoon style.
  • Great nostalgic atmosphere with numerous 80s pop culture references and a fitting synthwave soundtrack.
  • Engaging and emotional story that explores themes like friendship, loss, and growing up.
  • Clunky and frustrating gameplay mechanics, especially platforming and combat controls, leading to frequent difficulty spikes.
  • Poor save system with limited checkpoints and unskippable cutscenes before boss fights that must be watched repeatedly upon death.
  • Characters and dialogue often feel clichéd or underdeveloped, causing a lack of emotional attachment and story pacing issues.
  • story
    411 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the game is a nostalgic, 80s-themed coming-of-age adventure that combines heartfelt, dark, and complex moments with numerous pop culture references. While many praise its engaging narrative, emotional depth, and memorable characters, others find it rushed, clichéd, or overwhelmed by excessive dialogue and uneven pacing, especially in the latter half. Overall, the story stands out as both a highlight and a divisive aspect, strongly appealing to fans of retro storytelling but sometimes detracting from the gameplay experience.

    • “Okay then likes, the story is really good; it's a big tribute/love letter to the 80s, chock full of references and Easter eggs to movies, cartoon shows and music, and isn't just a tribute; it also tells a pretty heartfelt story about a group of kids facing overwhelming odds with plenty of great moments from heartfelt, funny to tragic.”
    • “The writing is excellent, with a story full of surprising moments, and countless touching moments; a real rarity when it comes to games like this.”
    • “The story is beautiful and the adventure of the whole game was wonderful; I laughed, I cried, and I'll tell you, this game was well worth playing to the very end.”
    • “A story like this might work if you spent more time with the characters in other adventures; here it just feels like someone made a finale for a story that was barely told.”
    • “The story is badly structured, felt emotionally artificial, and left an overall bad taste for me; the gameplay had good ideas but lacked the polishing needed to make them feel fun in a lot of stages and at the end of the day I feel misled by the developers and the way they marketed this title.”
    • “I can get behind references, I can get behind a few plot holes if they serve the purpose of the story... but here, we're talking a story and universe totally subservient to adding cameos and references; and plot holes so deep that the story completely stops making sense.”
  • gameplay
    230 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay offers a mix of combat, platforming, puzzles, and character-switching mechanics that provide some initial variety and fun, especially with unique abilities across multiple characters. However, many players find it uneven, overly simplistic, and sometimes frustrating due to pacing issues, limited character development, clunky controls, repetitive sections, and lack of polish. While the gameplay captures nostalgic 80s vibes and is serviceable at best, it often fails to sustain engagement or fully leverage its potential, particularly in later stages where combat and mechanics become duller.

    • “The gameplay is very good, it's a top down game where you play up to five characters each with their own abilities that can help you in both puzzles and combat. The combat was good although it did have some difficulty spikes sometimes with some bosses, but was not too bad.”
    • “Combining nostalgic 80s vibes with action-adventure gameplay, it features a charming blend of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat.”
    • “Plus the gameplay is fun, with the ability to switch between 5 characters each with their own unique skill set and abilities.”
    • “The gameplay is one of the worst gameplay systems I've ever seen, committing the cardinal sin of not providing enough information to the player, making most of the platforming a guessing game.”
    • “This game originally got my attention after I watched some of its preview videos on its store page, it was during a sale and being an indie it means it has an accessible price. To start, the game's art style is simply beautiful, with stylistic spritework that makes the game evoke successfully an 80s feel without being forced or cheap. It all comes together as something unique to me; on top of being very detailed and nice to look at, some cutscenes are animated like 2D short movies. When it comes to visuals, style, and audio, this game is well-made. The problem here is the gameplay. I was probably already halfway through beating the game when I put it down. The gameplay is very formulaic; it's your typical 2.5D indie action title. You have enemy encounters with very basic combat, some platform sections, and sections where you just walk around talking to NPCs. The problem is the game gets constantly interrupted by story sections where we just hang around interacting with NPCs or finding items. It would have been fine if the story or characters were more interesting. Even the gameplay itself, the combat is rather basic; you get to play as different characters but none of them feel unique enough to differ from the rest. Platforming is pretty crappy and unpolished. I encountered some weird bugs too, like when I jumped on a crate and my character drowned. The game just feels like it has no flow or pacing. After a while and some annoying sections I just lost interest and dropped it. I still think that the game deserves a recommendation; it's cheap and beautiful looking and has a serviceable gameplay, so some people may find something interesting here if they're fans of indies. But at the moment I want something more substantial and this game didn't work for me; it didn't grab my interest.”
    • “The gameplay is bland, the story is intentionally over-cliched, so much it's annoying. The combat didn't feel engaging and felt like it was not up to the same standard the rest of the game's mechanics showcased.”
  • music
    159 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music is highly praised for its outstanding 80s-inspired synthwave soundtrack, blending orchestral film scores with retro vibes that perfectly complement the pixel art and nostalgic atmosphere. Composers like Chris Kōbke and Timecop1983 receive special mention, and the soundtrack is often described as evocative, energetic, and emotionally resonant, deeply enhancing the overall experience. While some note limited variety in combat music and minor audio distractions, the soundtrack stands out as a major highlight and a key appeal of the game.

    • “Combat, along with each character's respective abilities, is intuitive, engaging, and amusing, and most of all, the soundtrack is evocative of scores by John Williams; it is worth listening to by itself.”
    • “The music is a great mix of synthwave and movie-style orchestration pieces, and surprisingly it has a really good vocal main theme.”
    • “The soundtrack, the pixel art, the retro-style cartoon cutscenes, and all those little pop-culture references are all well done, perfectly setting up that 80s Americana feeling.”
    • “I also hate it sometimes when you go into battle with random enemies and barely hear any fighting music in the background, except for bosses where it is epic; with normal enemies it is the same boring music with very loud attacking sounds when hitting enemies.”
    • “And all you can hear is dog barking blaring over the soundtrack.”
    • “Oh yeah, the music is *rarely* synthwave.”
  • graphics
    147 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are widely praised for their vibrant, nostalgic 80s-inspired pixel art style combined with beautifully animated hand-drawn cutscenes reminiscent of classic Saturday morning cartoons. Reviewers highlight the detailed, colorful visuals and strong retro aesthetic that capture the era's atmosphere, though some note occasional inconsistencies and minor graphical glitches. Overall, the graphics significantly contribute to the game's charm and appeal, standing out as a major strength despite some gameplay criticisms.

    • “The pixel graphics art style is really good with a nice use of color even in darker areas; there is also plenty of beautiful detail that makes the whole game's world stand out.”
    • “This game originally got my attention after I watched some of its preview videos in its store page. It was during a sale and being an indie means it has an accessible price. To start, the game's art style is simply beautiful, with stylistic sprite work that successfully evokes an 80s feel without being forced or cheap. It all comes together as something unique to me, on top of being very detailed and nice to look at. Some cutscenes are animated like 2D short movies, so when it comes to visuals, style, and audio too, this game is well-made.”
    • “With pixel graphics, VHS-styled cut-scenes, and a storyline that would not look out of place in a blockbuster rental, this game oozes style and nostalgia for anyone familiar with the 1980s movie, TV, and music scene.”
    • “The cardinal sin is the inconsistent art style though; I really hate that every single one of your party members is depicted in four different ways.”
    • “While the game's art and story are very nice and evocative of a 90s kids TV show aesthetic, the game is ruined by its actual gameplay.”
    • “The graphics are the standard pixel graphics that have been all the rage for quite some time now.”
  • emotional
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game delivers a heartfelt, nostalgic, and often emotional story with strong 80s references and a touching ending that resonates with many players, evoking laughter and tears. However, some find the character development lacking and the emotional impact diminished by certain story or gameplay elements, leading to mixed feelings about its depth and authenticity. Overall, it is praised for its emotional storytelling and atmosphere, though not all players connect equally with its characters or narrative execution.

    • “Okay then likes, the story is really good. It's a big tribute and love letter to the 80s, full of references and easter eggs to movies, cartoons, and music. It also tells a heartfelt story about a group of kids facing overwhelming odds, with great moments ranging from funny and heartfelt to tragic.”
    • “The story and adventure of the whole game were wonderful. I laughed, I cried, and I'll tell you, this game was well worth playing to the very end.”
    • “The writing is excellent, with a story full of surprising and countless touching moments—a real rarity in games like this.”
  • atmosphere
    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its strong 80s nostalgia, retro aesthetics, and engaging soundtrack, which effectively immerse players in a vintage, cinematic experience. However, some find it inconsistent, with moments that feel disjointed or mismatched, and occasional ambient sounds detracting from the mood. Overall, the atmosphere is considered a key strength, evoking both charm and a sense of nostalgia despite some uneven execution.

    • “Pretty epic piece of nostalgia with an awesome atmosphere and tons of film references.”
    • “The atmosphere, the soundtrack and the graphics really add to the nostalgia and I found the cut scenes to be amazing.”
    • “Brilliant action adventure with a charming tale and a lot of heart, capturing the atmosphere of the 80s perfectly.”
    • “There is dog barking in a handful of areas of the game that does not suit the atmosphere, oddly in most indoor areas.”
    • “Unless ambient sound or music adds value to the atmosphere and overall gameplay experience, there is no need for it.”
    • “I understand that the developers wanted to create a specific mood and atmosphere but it was a misfire.”
  • humor
    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is praised for its clever, nostalgic 80s references, witty dialogue, and hidden Easter eggs that often elicit smiles or laughs, though some find it campy or uneven. While the humor effectively complements the heartfelt and sometimes dark storyline, a few reviewers note that jokes can occasionally feel forced or less impactful as the game progresses. Overall, the humor adds charm and depth, especially for fans of 80s culture.

    • “The dialog is top notch, not to mention very funny, and the game is packed with hilarious hidden gems.”
    • “The game is equally devastating and hilarious with many easter eggs and hidden achievements to find and collect.”
    • “If you are familiar with 80's movies, you'll definitely find yourself laughing as you play through.”
    • “It's not funny.”
  • grinding
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in this game is widely criticized as tedious and repetitive, with frequent character switching and monotonous combat contributing to a frustrating experience. Players find the gameplay lacks inspiration and depth, often requiring repeated traversal of the same areas without meaningful variation, which diminishes enjoyment. Overall, the grinding detracts significantly from the game's pacing and engagement.

    • “The protagonists and story are void of depth, passion or creativity, the gameplay is basic but made tedious by the five different characters you have to cycle through every time you want to perform one single action; and the game just has no sense of consistent structure with what it actually wants to do.”
    • “Combat gets especially obnoxious in the later half of the story, as enemies are defeated in the exact same way they were since the beginning part of the game, except there are a lot more of them now; it's a tedious grind to clear them out the exact same way every time.”
    • “Some are close while the difficulty setting is very low and when the game really challenges you the safe points are nowhere to be seen resulting in doing the same (long tedious) parts all over again.”
  • stability
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game’s stability is notably compromised by frequent glitches, bugs in platforming and combat, control issues, and occasional graphical errors, which some players find frustrating or game-breaking. However, others report that while bugs are present, they do not significantly ruin the overall experience. Overall, the stability issues detract from the enjoyment but are not consistently severe across all playthroughs.

    • “The platforming is way too buggy and you cannot remap the controls at all, so your left hand becomes extremely cramped as you try to both jump and hold onto things.”
    • “The gameplay is relatively easy and unrewarding at its best and downright infuriating and buggy at its worst.”
    • “Also, how can a game made by an established studio be so damn buggy.”
  • character development
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is widely seen as lacking or insufficient, with many players feeling that characters do not evolve meaningfully throughout the story. While some appreciate the character design and certain narrative elements, overall the development is considered inconsistent and unengaging by many. However, a few users praised the pop culture references and found the character development effective.

    • “Fun character designs, nice aesthetic, interesting gameplay concept, interesting story concept... and yet, it goes nowhere with any of it.”
    • “From the pop culture references to the character development, this game is on point.”
    • “My problem is that it is not long enough and/or there is not a lot of character development.”
    • “No consistency in design, awful character design, no pacing, terrible planning and editing.”
    • “Besides plot-driven character development, everything you start the game with is what you finish the game with.”
  • replayability
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers limited replayability, primarily appealing to players aiming to collect missed items or unlock achievements. Most reviewers agree it lacks substantial value for multiple playthroughs beyond exploring different character perspectives. Overall, it is recommended to consider waiting for a sale due to its low replay value.

    • “Because of this, its replayability is pretty low (you'd mostly just be starting a new game to find collectibles you missed the first time around).”
    • “The game has no replay value at all, other than getting the achievements.”
    • “If you’re unsure about getting it, I’d wait until it goes on sale, since there isn’t much replayability.”
