The story of Crosscode is a compelling blend of sci-fi and RPG elements, centered around Lea, a mute protagonist navigating a virtual MMO world to recover her lost memories. Players appreciate the emotional depth and character development, with many noting unexpected plot twists and engaging side quests that enhance the overall narrative experience. However, some critiques highlight pacing issues, particularly in the early game where the story unfolds slowly amidst numerous fetch quests and puzzles, which can detract from the narrative momentum. Overall, the game is praised for its rich storytelling, memorable characters, and the unique integration of gameplay mechanics with the plot.

“Crosscode takes place in a futuristic virtual world where Lea, a mute protagonist, progresses through dungeons and missions, meeting many friends along the way, all while she goes down a rabbit hole of hidden secrets and threats against her and the virtual space as she knows it.”
“The story of Lea and the rest of the supporting cast is just brilliant, and I really learned to love pretty much each and every character.”
“Your story is not special and nobody needs you.”
“The only complaint is that the DLC is 100% mandatory to conclude the story.”
“The story is not groundbreaking, but it personally hit me quite hard at some interactions.”

“The gameplay is a mix of solid action RPG and puzzle elements. However, the puzzles can become tedious and frustrating, especially when they require precise execution of mechanics that aren't always clearly communicated.”
“Some fights are just stupid with poorly telegraphed mechanics that even when you find out what to do you just do not want to, because it's the most annoying answer to 'how do I defeat this enemy.'”
“The gameplay can be frustrating at times, especially with the jumping mechanics that can feel awkward and lead to unnecessary deaths during platforming sections.”

“The music complements the game perfectly, setting the mood for various scenarios, from intense battles to emotional moments, adding depth and dimension to the gaming experience.”
“The soundtrack is so amazing that I even bought it online just to support the guy who did it.”
“The music is nothing special and over time you hear the same music track for area repeatedly, then it gets boring.”
“You're going to be hearing the same soundtrack for the area you're in over and over and over, and it gets to the point where you just want to get to another area as quickly as possible, just to get a new soundtrack playing.”
“The music could become too repetitive for some, though it never bothered me.”

The graphics of CrossCode have received widespread acclaim for their stunning pixel art style, which evokes nostalgia while incorporating modern design elements. Reviewers highlight the vibrant colors, fluid animations, and intricate details that bring the game world to life, making it visually captivating. However, some players note that the 2D perspective can occasionally hinder depth perception during platforming sections, leading to minor frustrations. Overall, the game's visuals are celebrated as a standout feature, contributing significantly to its charm and appeal.
“The visuals in CrossCode are stunning, with vibrant, colorful graphics that bring the game's world to life.”
“As stated, the graphics in CrossCode are just amazing, with such a vibrant and colorful atmosphere, topped off with a phenomenal soundtrack that complements the theme of every area CrossCode has to offer.”
“The pixel art style, combined with vibrant colors and intricate world design, creates a visually stunning environment that feels nostalgic yet modern.”
“This is made incredibly painful by the fact that the game's graphics make it nearly impossible to tell exactly how high up something is - until you jump, can't reach it, and then have to backtrack across several areas.”
“The retro style graphics make platforming guesswork.”
“The jumping puzzles can be hard to figure out as well and here is one of the only true major flaws of the game: since it's a 2D retro graphics game that also has parkour and platforming puzzles, sometimes it's really hard to judge heights and distances.”

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed feedback from players. While some appreciate the engaging combat and exploration that make grinding feel rewarding and enjoyable, others find it tedious and repetitive, often comparing it to traditional MMO mechanics with low drop rates and excessive fetch quests. Overall, players suggest that while grinding is not strictly necessary to progress, it can become a significant part of the experience, especially for completionists.
“Unless you are aiming to 100% the game, no grinding is needed.”
“One of my favorite things about this game is that it requires no grinding for levels, and by just playing the game you get most of the items you need for the few 'grind' quests that exist.”
“Amazing story and OSTs, absolutely no grinding, never boring content.”
“The game is set in an MMO and needlessly copies MMO elements, like grinding for gear.”
“Often I have found myself at a point in the story where I feel perfectly emotionally ready to continue, but the game stops me and says 'nope, you gotta spend some time grinding for gear and levels.'”
“The pacing immediately grinds to a halt and you find yourself doing mindless fetch quests and grinding for nothing.”

The humor in the game is widely praised for its clever writing and well-crafted character interactions, often blending comedic moments with emotional depth. Players appreciate the meta-humor and references to gaming culture, which enhance the overall experience without feeling forced. The protagonist's unique communication style, combined with relatable characters and witty dialogue, contributes to a consistently entertaining atmosphere throughout the game.
“The dialogue had me laughing so many times.”
“It mixes humor and having dramatic moments very well; it might be a sad scene, but there will somehow be a joke that cracks you up a bit, cheering you through the sadness.”
“The characters are relatable, regular people, and the world itself is a whirlpool of humor and inspired design.”
“It feels forced, and they may forget to add it in, so all the 'jokes' are not funny. I know I can skip it in New Game Plus, but if someone new is playing the game, well...”
“A good comedy show is 70% unfunny and 30% absolutely hilarious.”

The atmosphere in CrossCode is widely praised for its vibrant graphics and exceptional soundtrack, which together create an immersive and engaging experience. “The atmosphere of the game is phenomenal.”
“All of the areas of CrossCode are beautifully designed, and provided an excellent atmosphere via the outstanding soundtrack.”
“The soundtrack is incredibly groovy, the atmosphere is cozy, the art style is gorgeous, there's really not much to dislike!”
“Once you know how the windows and symbols work, it goes from atmosphere to storing a hidden chest, or a new route, or a shortcut.”
“Atmosphere is not what I would call sci-fi or at least it's far from that with most of the time staying in ugly looking dungeons.”
“And I love the atmosphere and idea of the game, but again I played 4 hours and the game didn't even start; it felt like a long 4-hour tutorial.”

“The character development is subtle and well-established; everyone gets a chance to shine, and there's not a single character I dislike.”
“I have played a lot of games in my life, but I don't believe I have ever played a game (without voice acting) with as much character development as CrossCode.”
“The story surpassed my expectations and then some, with plot twists, heartfelt moments, character development, and meaningful side characters.”
“Lots of puzzles getting in the way of my combat and character development.”
“The downside is the fetch quests and confined/linear world/character development.”
“I wish your own character development was more open-ended.”

Overall, the optimization of the game is a mixed bag, with many players experiencing smooth performance but also encountering occasional stuttering, crashes, and frame drops, particularly during intense combat or in crowded areas. Some users found that adjusting settings or using specific versions of the game improved performance, while others noted that the game runs better without Steam. Despite these issues, many players still enjoyed the gameplay and found it well-crafted, though some expressed frustration with the optimization and performance inconsistencies.
“I liked that I had to think about how to approach a boss or arena battle (late-game content) to optimize my performance.”
“The game is well optimized; v1.0.0.7 runs very fast and I didn’t encounter any bugs.”
“Very well put together, high attention to detail; everything in this game is a silky smooth gaming experience performance-wise.”
“Constant microstuttering that requires a mod to fix.”
“The main flaws within the game lie with performance and options menu issues.”
“There's a lot of potential, and I do understand that it's early access, but it has a lot of optimization problems to deal with, especially in main battles.”

The game boasts high replayability primarily due to its customizable New Game Plus (NG+) options, which allow players to tailor their experience and explore various playstyles. Many reviewers highlight the engaging combat, diverse build options, and unique character interactions that enhance replay value, although some note that the overall replayability may vary based on individual preferences. While the NG+ feature significantly boosts replay potential, a few players feel that the game may not hold their interest for multiple playthroughs.
“The customizable New Game+ options create a lot of replayability.”
“Everything about this game is perfect to me: wonderful story, clever puzzle design, tight fun combat, and many different awesome options for New Game+ runs for hours upon hours of replayability. An underrated gem if ever there was one.”
“The various combat build options and New Game+ modifiers give the game a lot of replayability.”
“Not a lot of replayability apart from new game+.”
“My only issue with this game is I can't push myself to replay it all again; I've replayed it too many times, it's hard to pick up again. As with all single-player games, they're not very replayable, but this game does have new game+ that makes repeatability more interesting.”
“It has a fair number of completionist elements, but has little replayability.”

The game's stability is a mixed bag, with many players reporting a range of bugs and glitches, particularly on Linux and during specific gameplay scenarios. While some users have experienced smooth performance, especially on the Steam Deck, others have encountered frustrating issues like freezing, graphical glitches, and NPC pathing problems. Overall, while the game is generally playable and enjoyable, it does have notable stability concerns that developers are reportedly working to address.
“This game runs great on Steam Deck if you configure the Steam Play None runtime.”
“No bugs, no glitches, no crashes, no lags; everything works perfectly. I can't believe this is in early access!”
“Wonderful game so far, runs great on my laptop and I'm enjoying the little secrets.”
“Like, I know how to solve this puzzle, but the fiddly aiming controls and buggy sliding boxes means it takes 10 minutes to actually complete it. Tedious.”
“The game engine is a little buggy on Linux: the Steam overlay does not work, notifications can cause graphical glitches in the game (turn those off or use windowed mode), and it just calls itself 'chromium' in the sound mixer.”
“I used to play this game calmly on my machine (since 2020 when I bought it), but for some reason currently when I try to play and click on the 'options' button, the game freezes and gives a critical error screen claiming that the 'button does not exist'. I really don't understand much about scripting, but thanks to a blessed son of Jesus Christ who was the only one who paid attention to me, had the patience to explain to me what was happening through a post I made in the CrossCode community on Reddit and told me that this was what was happening, and that I could try to contact the developers to see if there was a solution, but they literally ignored all my calls, I believe because this game has already been closed.”

The monetization aspect of the game has received mixed feedback, with some players feeling misled by advertising and expressing concerns about microtransactions and the prevalence of ads, which detracts from the overall experience. However, others appreciate the game's fair challenge and polished presentation, suggesting that it stands apart from typical cash-grab models seen in modern AAA titles. Overall, there is a desire for more transparency and less reliance on monetization tactics in favor of delivering a rich gaming experience.
“CrossCode is challenging but very fair, has wonderful visuals and highly polished animations with intense visual feedback on speed and power of characters and actions. It's almost a tragedy that many people will skip this game simply because of the art style. We must work together to spread the word and tell the whole world that we need more polished, rich, and masterful games like this and less microtransactions and day 1 patches.”
“I feel like I was misled by the advertising.”
“I still feel that the game has misleading advertising, and is an MMO. Although it is suggested that you can just spend credits to get suitable gear for new areas, that hasn't lined up with my (admittedly early) experiences.”
“When it feels like most modern AAA games become cash grabs with microtransactions and pointless grind, this game overall flowed very well.”
