The gameplay in Claybook is characterized by unique and satisfying physics, particularly in clay deformation, but it suffers from a lack of engaging content and objectives, leading to a repetitive experience. While the mechanics are fun and visually appealing, many players find the gameplay simplistic and frustrating, with some expressing hope for future updates to enhance content and gameplay depth. Overall, the game is seen as a promising concept that currently falls short in execution, making it difficult to recommend.
“Very unique and satisfying physics, gameplay, and graphics.”
“Fun levels and gameplay.”
“It's got some bugs, but the gameplay is amazing and the worlds are beautiful.”
“The gameplay feels, just, bad, you know?”
“The whole game is an exercise mainly in frustration as navigating the world as a physically simulated clay blob, while impressive, is rather imprecise, and I feel the addition of the rewind mechanic is only an admission of that.”
“The concept of clay deformation was implemented flawlessly, but besides that, Claybook is a bare-bones game with simplistic gameplay and a paucity of content to engage with.”

The music in the game is described as calming and cheerful but becomes repetitive quickly, with players expressing a desire for more diverse tracks and themed music for different levels. While the visuals are praised, the limited sound effects and lack of variety in the soundtrack detract from the overall experience, leading to frustration for some players. Many hope for improvements in future updates to enhance the musical aspect of the game.
“The soundtrack is very calming and relaxing, but repetitive after a little while.”
“Lovely graphics and soundtracks that remind me a lot of Toy Story.”
“Amazing visuals, along with the soundtrack.”
“There are very few sound effects to speak of, and you'll quickly grow tired of the same cheery music track that plays over every level of the game.”
“Also, that gosh darn music that plays on repeat, the same song, all the time.”
“The music is annoying, too distracting and doesn't really fit.”

The game lacks a coherent story, focusing instead on a series of missions that vary significantly in difficulty, with many players finding them frustrating due to poor controls and awkward physics. While the concept of transforming shapes and rewinding time is intriguing, the execution leads to a disjointed experience that often feels more like a chore than engaging gameplay. Overall, the absence of a narrative detracts from the potential enjoyment of the game.
“The fundamental concept is rolling around a kid’s clay tabletop as you transmorph into different shapes and rewind time to fulfill mission goals.”
“You could make your own maps or do the story.”
“Lovely graphics and soundtracks that remind me a lot of Toy Story.”
“There's no story here.”
“Any mission or shape they do add is just more and more excruciating to interact with.”
“Timed missions do not work well with this game, because the controls are so floaty that it just becomes frustrating.”

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious and frustrating, with objectives that feel thoughtless and overly repetitive. The in-game editor is not user-friendly, making creative tasks cumbersome, while the precision required for building objects leads to excessive time spent on simple tasks. Overall, the grinding experience detracts significantly from the enjoyment of the game.
“The game, even if it controlled well, wouldn't exactly be fun, I think, as the objectives are all tedious and thoughtless.”
“It might be the creative part that can lift this game up, but the in-game editor is not very user-friendly as of now, so it's pretty tedious to mess around with the game that way.”
“Building objects is tediously precise; any movement disrupts any clay you touch. For example, building the pyramid had me spending far too long repeatedly building one square, building the second square, slightly damaging my previous square, and repeating several times.”

However, they suggest that additional levels and enhanced workshop features could further boost its replayability. “What's important is that it is really impressive on a technical level, really fun to play, and really replayable due to the integrated level editor and workshop support.”
“More levels and workshop support would increase the game's replayability.”

Got world building?

Claybook is admittedly ambitious. It’s also quite a nice looking and unique game, with commendable user features. Yet it struggled to command my attention, lacking elements to maintain interest beyond a few minutes at a time. The community creations do help here to an extent, but the overall experience needs to be tightened, and perhaps reigned in a bit.
