Reviews
- Offers a nostalgic throwback to PS2/PS3/Xbox 360 era hack-and-slash games, capturing the style and feel of classic titles like God of War.
- Engaging pirate-themed atmosphere with enjoyable combat featuring swordplay, ranged weapons, and cinematic boss battles.
- Successful preservation and release of a long-lost game from development hell, providing a unique experience and historical gaming curiosity.
- Gameplay is often clunky, repetitive, and frustrating, with poor enemy balance, frequent stun locks, and awkward controls lacking modern refinement.
- Numerous technical issues including inconsistent audio mixing, bugs, softlocks, and problematic checkpoint placement that hamper the experience.
- Lack of depth and polish in story, mechanics, and design, making it less enjoyable or recommended outside of niche nostalgia fans or collectors.
gameplay
45 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe gameplay offers a simple, old-school hack-and-slash experience that prioritizes fun and accessibility over depth and technical refinement, with some satisfying combat combos and tactical elements. However, it suffers from repetitive combat, basic enemy AI, camera issues, frustrating mechanics like excessive stun effects, and several bugs that undermine the overall experience. While it holds nostalgic charm and suits fans of classic arcade-style pirate adventures, players seeking modern, polished gameplay may find it lackluster and occasionally aggravating.
“This approach allows the game to maintain a consistent pace and keeps the emphasis firmly on gameplay.”
“While the mechanics may lack the precision and complexity found in modern character-action games, they provide a satisfying arcade-like experience that prioritizes fun over technical mastery.”
“The progression mechanics fit well within the game's straightforward design philosophy and help maintain a satisfying sense of growth throughout the campaign.”
“Combat can become repetitive during longer sessions, enemy behavior is relatively basic, and some mechanics lack the refinement expected from modern action titles.”
“This game could/would probably be decent if it wasn't being held back by the wonky gameplay mechanics and some terrible design decisions.”
“Now it's finally here and while I'm glad to see a game that could have been gone forever is now out for all to check out, it fails to impress outside of its pulpy tone and nostalgic charm in the visuals due to its dull gameplay with tedious and frustrating set pieces as well as the amount of bugs it carried with.”

40%Captain Blood Review (PS5)
Captain Blood is an action adventure game that fails in its attempt of vindication after already struggling to stay above water. It doesn’t do anything new, exciting, or fun being released in this modern era of gaming and even it’s archaic style and influential takeaways can’t keep it afloat with issues such as audio inconsistencies, bland level structure, vexing enemy A.I., graphical hiccups, and pure negligible combat and upgrade systems. Captain Blood should have been a great comeback story, but has sadly been released with no substance, style, or grace.
