Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection

The problem, ultimately, is that this is a collection of really lackluster titles. Even the best game here isn’t worth your time. It’s hard to recommend to anyone because they’re not even bad in an interesting way; they’re just poorly designed. If you are somehow the rare person who has spent the last 30 years holding a torch for this annoying bobcat, then this is the collection for you, but everyone else should stay away.

  • Comprehensive collection including all classic Bubsy games with multiple ports and extra content like developer interviews, concept art, manuals, and the cartoon pilot, which works well as a gaming museum and preserves Bubsy's history.
  • Quality of life improvements such as save states, rewind features, and the inclusion of a refurbished version of Bubsy 3D with analog controls make the games more playable than original releases.
  • The collection is well put together with faithful emulation, runs well even on devices like the Steam Deck, and offers good value for fans of the character or those interested in 90s platformers and video game mascot nostalgia.
  • Most of the games themselves are mediocre to poor in quality with issues like frustrating difficulty, slippery or tank controls, unfair level design, and technical glitches, especially Bubsy 3D which remains awkward despite improvements.
  • The refurbished version of Bubsy 3D still has notable glitches, inconsistent controls in certain levels, and lacks save/load functionality, sometimes causing crashes and loss of save data, leading to a frustrating experience.
  • Some bonus content is limited or barebones, with missing versions like the PC port 'Super Bubsy', and minor interface issues such as lack of volume control in menus, awkward button mappings, and no option to remap keys.
  • music
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the collection is generally well-received, featuring enjoyable tracks, dynamic motifs linked to gameplay, and impressive remixes like Sean Bialo's menu theme. Users appreciate the inclusion of an OST player and bonus musical content, though occasional audio glitches and repetitive loops can disrupt the experience. Overall, the music adds significant value alongside the rich bonus materials offered.

    • “The music is very good though, 'Bobcatfish' is a track I like to listen to a lot.”
    • “If there are certain enemies nearby, a motif will play over the music.”
    • “Also, shout out to Sean Bialo for the amazing remix of the Bubsy theme in the menu; he makes some great music.”
    • “The only other problem I have with this collection is that I've noticed the games perform inconsistently; sometimes the music stops for a moment, then plays fast for a few seconds before returning to normal.”
    • “The music is tied to how fast you go and where you are, so certain tracks just repeat over and over, with no clear indication of what you have to do or where to go.”
    • “If there's certain enemies nearby, a motif will play over the music, which can be distracting.”
  • humor
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in this pack is appreciated for capturing Bubsy's quirky and absurd charm, blending both nostalgic and comedic elements that highlight the character's legacy. Reviewers find it funny and endearing how the collection embraces Bubsy's ups and downs, making it a unique and enjoyable experience.

    • “Bubsy means more to me than just a simple video game character, and this pack goes above and beyond to show everything he ever had to offer, from his failed games, to his silly cartoons, to becoming an infamous gaming icon, all lovingly captured and restored, and playable in a more modern setting while still retaining everything that made the funny feline such a recognizable character in the gaming space.”
    • “For me, I love this pack, as it flourishes in everything Bubsy, from the positive, to the negative, to the funny, to the absurd.”
    • “It is both hilarious and tragic that in the 2020s Bubsy is given a better collection than Mario and especially Sonic.”
  • graphics
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics receive mixed feedback, with Super Bubsy praised for its fully remade visuals, while Bubsy 3D is criticized for poor, outdated graphics and frustrating camera controls. The emulator struggles with crashes and significant texture corruptions, impacting the overall visual experience. However, the collection includes various visual extras such as artwork and promotional material that add value.

    • “With Super Bubsy you at least have a game that never came to consoles, more collectibles, sounds, remix of the music, and all the graphics have been remade.”
    • “Has some nice music and visuals I suppose.”
    • “Essentially this collection is just a bunch of ROMs with extra content like accolade pitches for the game, game designs, artwork, videos, promotional material.”
    • “I ran into three crashes over my two-day playthrough, and multiple graphics corruptions, one of which made almost every texture in the game a corrupted pink square.”
    • “Bubsy 3D is awful, the graphics are terrible even back then, the controls are tank controls and the camera will shoot upwards whenever you jump.”
    • “With Super Bubsy, you at least have a game that never came to consoles, more collectibles, sounds, remix of the music and all the graphics have been remade.”
  • gameplay
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is praised for being fun, nostalgic, and capturing the classic '90s platforming style with engaging mechanics like gliding and jumping. However, some aspects like the rewind feature can be confusing, as it relies on auto-savestates rather than true rewinding. Overall, it offers more engaging gameplay and better writing compared to some modern titles.

    • “The gameplay is a blast: super fun, nostalgic, and perfectly captures that classic '90s platforming vibe with gliding, jumping, and yarn-collecting chaos.”
    • “Bubsy 3D has more gameplay and better writing than Detroit: Become Human.”
    • “Rewinds are also confusing, because it's not actual rewinding, it's instead a series of auto-savestates with corresponding images of the gameplay at the moment it was taken.”
  • stability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The stability of these games is problematic, with frequent visual glitches and issues like the broken momentum system and rockets not tracking properly in Bubsy 3D. The refurbished version improves on the original but still suffers from significant stability glitches.

    • “While I do like these games and took the time to beat all of them, the broken momentum system across all games, the rockets not sticking to their track in Bubsy 3D, and quite a bit of visual glitches prevent me from recommending this game.”
    • “Plus Bubsy 3D: Refurbished is so much more of a mess with glitches.”
    • “New version of 3D is much better than the original, but has some big glitches.”
  • replayability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game’s replayability is limited, with some improvements like analog controls and save states offering slight enhancements, but overall, these changes do not significantly increase its long-term appeal or playability.

  • grinding
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users find the grinding aspect tedious due to the lack of quick access features like hotkey save/load state, making repetitive tasks more time-consuming.

  • story
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is familiar and somewhat predictable, centering on Barnabus, who is often labeled as "the worst video game mascot," though this reputation is questioned. Overall, the narrative offers little new but provides context for the character's dubious status.

  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game delivers a powerful emotional impact, evoking strong feelings and nostalgia that resonate deeply with players. Its retro style enhances the sentimental experience, often moving players to tears.

    • “It hit me right in the feels, made me cry with its retro magic.”
  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization is minimal and unobtrusive, limited to a few advertisements and videos, with no aggressive in-app purchases or paywalls.

  • optimization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from significant performance issues, indicating poor optimization that affects smooth gameplay.
