  • Unique and fun time rewind mechanic adding strategic depth to combat and puzzles
  • Fast-paced and smooth hack-and-slash combat with satisfying combos and execution animations
  • Visually appealing environments with varied locations and atmospheric music
  • Main character's constant talking and annoying voice acting
  • Repetitive combat and enemy variety leading to monotony
  • Clunky controls, awkward camera, and occasional bugs/glitches affecting gameplay experience
  • story
    522 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in this game is generally seen as mediocre to poor, often described as confusing, clichéd, and lacking depth or emotional engagement. While some find it passable or mildly intriguing as a backdrop for the fast-paced hack-and-slash gameplay, many criticize its weak presentation, plot holes, unimaginative characters, and subpar voice acting. Overall, it's serviceable but forgettable, appealing mainly to players more interested in combat than narrative.

    • “Perfect in short, the game has everything you need - fully hack and slash, amazing music, brutal creatures, nice storyline, mind blowing puzzle levels.”
    • “A solid selection and variety of moves, an interesting time-rewind feature to overwhelm enemies with multiple copies of oneself and solve basic button-press puzzles, nicely designed enemies, varied, beautifully designed and memorable levels, a great soundtrack, a not necessarily revolutionary but nevertheless somewhat interesting story (it needs time to build up, but when it does it takes pretty epic shapes), increasingly likable characters, pretty good voice acting and big numbers of lines.”
    • “The game greatly manages to establish its world and lore, without weighing too much on them: the story is centered on an adventure guild, which, through a magic sphere operated by its guildmaster, sends its members to a remote mythical island called Dragonland, that is rumored to contain many treasures, as well as dangers.”
    • “If you are the type to love the game's story and it's the most important thing there is, then this game is just not for you. I just finished it, and I still have no idea what it was about. The story makes zero sense from start to finish. This game is just good for a mindless hack and slash, nothing more.”
    • “The story starts in a way that feels like we missed an entire prologue, and jumps right into the characters fighting each other, with no explanation on who anyone is and why we should care about them. The overall story makes little sense (at least not in a way that matters), and there's no reason to stay invested in the world, the lore, or the characters.”
    • “The story is just bad, I stopped paying attention halfway through. From the graphics, the story, the gameplay, and even sounds and music, nothing impresses, and almost everything disappoints in some fashion.”
  • gameplay
    459 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay in Blades of Time centers around fast-paced, combo-driven hack-and-slash combat enhanced by a unique time rewind mechanic that allows players to create clones of past actions for use in both combat and puzzles. While the core combat, including melee, ranged, and magic attacks, is generally praised for variety and fun, many note the game's execution is uneven with clunky controls, repetitive enemy encounters, and occasional frustration with camera and mechanics. Despite these flaws, the innovative time manipulation system adds strategic depth and keeps gameplay engaging, making it the standout feature that elevates an otherwise typical action-adventure experience.

    • “The game's strongest feature is its time-rewind mechanic, which allows players to duplicate their past actions by creating clones that replay previous moves in real-time.”
    • “Blades of Time is a solid action-adventure hack-and-slash game that merges traditional melee combat with innovative time manipulation mechanics, providing a unique gameplay experience.”
    • “The core gameplay revolves around Ayumi's fast-paced melee abilities, supplemented by ranged attacks, magical powers, and an engaging time rewind system used in both combat and puzzle solving.”
    • “This is a sequel/reboot of x-blades and while the controls are somewhat improved, the new rewind time mechanic is awful and just forces you to use it.”
    • “The time rewind mechanic sucks, playing with controller is annoying as the camera isn't smooth, but instead it's very choppy and hard to be precise with it.”
    • “Very clunky mechanics and overall game design.”
  • graphics
    267 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are generally regarded as decent to good for its 2012 release, with vibrant, colorful, and detailed environments that evoke a fantasy/steampunk aesthetic. While not technically groundbreaking and somewhat dated by modern standards, the visuals remain appealing and contribute to an engaging atmosphere, though some criticize oversaturation, blocky models, and inconsistent quality. Overall, the graphics effectively complement the gameplay and setting, offering a visually pleasant experience despite occasional flaws and limited customization.

    • “The environments are engaging — jungles, ruins, icy zones, and fantasy landscapes give the game a sense of adventure, even if the visuals are clearly dated.”
    • “Besides its splendid visuals that can still hold against the newest games, the time-rewinding/time cloning mechanic makes all the fights an extremely interesting mix of action and puzzle.”
    • “The graphics were quite beautiful generally, with vibrant and vivid colors in all stages and some occasionally stunning backgrounds here and there.”
    • “The graphics might have been at least okay in 2012, but they aged really badly.”
    • “It is hard to even look at the graphics; they are so oversaturated and overly illuminated that you are reminded of drug-induced fever dreams.”
    • “Graphically the game looks like garbage even for the standards of 2012 and the voice acting is very reminiscent of 90's voice acting in the sense of how awful it is.”
  • music
    49 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with many praising its suitability and atmospheric fit, often describing it as good, pleasant, or energetic. However, several users find the soundtrack forgettable, generic, or uninspiring, with some criticizing it as overly dramatic or unmemorable. Overall, while the music complements gameplay for some, it generally lacks standout or memorable tracks.

    • “The soundtrack fits the action, with energetic tracks during battles and calmer tones during exploration.”
    • “A solid selection and variety of moves, an interesting time-rewind feature to overwhelm enemies with multiple copies of oneself and solve basic button-press puzzles, nicely designed enemies, varied, beautifully designed and memorable levels, a great soundtrack, a not necessarily revolutionary but nevertheless somewhat interesting story (it needs time to build up, but when it does it takes pretty epic shapes), increasingly likeable characters, a pretty good voice acting and big numbers of lines.”
    • “The music fits very well with the game and is pleasant to listen to.”
    • “Sound is horribly bugged too, cutting out dialogue, volumes all over the place, forgettable music, garden shack voice acting, and non-stop sound of clashing metal.”
    • “Combat still has no weight and impact to it, boss fights absolutely blow, music has little relation to the situation and environment, enemies are the same models just copied and pasted en masse, and the story progression is confusing.”
    • “The soundtrack is not very good. I recommend just listening to your own music or something that is not from this soundtrack.”
  • stability
    37 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from frequent bugs and glitches, including crashes, control quirks, graphical issues, and occasional game-breaking moments that often require reloads or restarts to fix. While some players encounter only minor or rare issues, others find these technical problems significantly detract from the experience, making parts frustrating or nearly unplayable. Despite this, the game generally runs smoothly for many users, though stability remains a notable concern.

    • “The combat is fluid most of the time and runs great.”
    • “This game is janky as hell, buggy, features bad voice acting, limited options in combat, and overall feels like wish.”
    • “Oh and when I say buggy, I mean falling through the floor on the last boss, but that was only when my game wasn't glitching me into only using my fire skill when I left clicked, making it impossible to beat him (which required me to exit and reload every time it happened).”
    • “Annoying and buggy to the point of being an unplayable waste of time.”
  • humor
    28 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game largely stems from its hilariously bad voice acting, awkward dialogue, and quirky animations, which many players find unintentionally funny and charming. The game's cheesy writing and occasional absurd moments create a comedic experience that, despite its flaws, adds to the overall enjoyment. Players often laugh at the game's shortcomings, such as poor scripting and wonky animations, embracing its campy and lighthearted nature.

    • “The writing of this game is so hilariously bad it was not even a con in my opinion, because it's so bad you'll literally just laugh at every second line anyone utters.”
    • “The voice acting and lines are at times hilariously bad.”
    • “Cheesing boss AI to shoot them through things was hilarious, and also just fully embracing the story and characters.”
  • character development
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is generally seen as shallow and simplistic, with a focus on colorful and exaggerated character designs rather than deep motivations or growth. While some appreciate the fun, adventurous story and unique designs, many criticize the dialogue, voice acting, and character motivations as weak or poorly executed. Overall, character design quality varies, often viewed as either distracting or uninspired, but the game maintains a light-hearted and enjoyable tone.

    • “Fairly well paced and some really cool character designs.”
    • “It has a great atmosphere, nice character design (a necessary comment these days) and the gameplay is very good.”
    • “The dialogue, story, and main character design feel like they were written by a Japanophile high school kid and then translated by Google; character motivations are as flimsy as "because the story says so" and if at any point anyone started asking questions or making intelligent decisions, the game would simply cease to be.”
    • “The story is simple and sometimes cheesy, focusing on adventure and mysterious artifacts rather than deep character development.”
    • “I said before that the game is simplified, and this applies to character development and equipment.”
  • optimization
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization reviews are mixed but generally positive, with many users praising stable and smooth performance on modern and even low-end hardware, though some note age-related issues and poor 4K optimization. The game runs well with high frame rates and minimal lag, but controls and gamepad support lack refinement. Overall, it feels like a polished and well-optimized product for its time.

    • “+ very good optimization, no lags, bug etc. feels like 100% finished product.”
    • “It absolutely stands up to some of today's games but is beautifully optimized.”
    • “- graphics when maxed are insanely beautiful for 2012 and are extremely optimized (120fps constant capped on amd 8320 cpu which most games hate).”
    • “This uneven technical performance extends to the overall design—environments alternate between lushly detailed ruins and barren, empty stretches, giving the experience a stop-and-start rhythm that hampers its pacing.”
    • “Hack and slash with okay gameplay, but flat story, characters and poorly optimized for 4K.”
    • “Gamepad support is not optimized either.”
  • replayability
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Replayability in Blades of Time is generally limited, with some appeal coming from higher difficulty levels, score chasing, and New Game+ features that add tougher enemies and extra items. While the core campaign is repetitive and offers little incentive to replay for the story, the hard mode and DLC provide additional fun and challenge for dedicated players. Overall, the game has modest replay value, primarily for those seeking a more challenging hack-and-slash experience.

    • “Infinitely replayable.”
    • “Decent replay value; hard mode and New Game+ add new items in chests in addition to beefed-up enemies.”
    • “Replay value on hard was a lot more fun than expected (I would usually find that boring).”
    • “In terms of longevity, Blades of Time offers a fair amount of content but limited replay value.”
    • “There’s some replay value through higher difficulties and score chasing, but it doesn’t deeply reward mastery beyond combat efficiency.”
    • “There's plenty of hack & slash fun to be had but the campaign is repetitive, the story laughable and there's no replay value once you are done with it.”
  • grinding
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is generally seen as tedious and repetitive, with some players finding combat balance issues leading to frustrating stun locking and damage sponge enemies. However, others appreciate the non-grindy level design and balanced combat that prevents boredom during leveling. Overall, grinding may feel monotonous for some due to repetitive enemy encounters and mechanics, but not overly unfair or unbearable.

    • “What starts out as fun fast combat quickly turns into a frustrating slog with constant stun locking, tedious range combat with impotent weapons, endless hitbox dissonance, and damage sponge enemies.”
    • “Howver the basic balancing of enemies, their attacks and hitboxes, their health numbers, and your own attack strength just serves to make it bland and tedious.”
    • “It's getting boring and tedious to slash the same enemies over and over.”
  • atmosphere
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is widely praised for its fantastic, immersive qualities, supported by beautiful and varied environments, strong character design, and fitting music. It effectively creates a sense of wonder and exploration, enhanced by detailed scenic settings and a mysterious, magical vibe. While voice acting and story coherence receive some minor criticism, they do not significantly detract from the overall atmospheric experience.

    • “It has a great atmosphere, nice character design (a necessary comment these days) and the gameplay is very good.”
    • “The scenic environments are built really nice and have an epic atmosphere, something to stop and look around at.”
    • “Nice atmosphere for an original setting; it managed to instill a certain sense of wonderment and exploration despite being linear.”
  • emotional
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game’s emotional impact is limited, with themes like greed and betrayal present but underdeveloped, resulting in a narrative that lacks depth and emotional immersion. While the presentation complements the action, it doesn’t strongly engage players on an emotional level.

  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features no microtransactions, which is positively received by users as a fair and enjoyable monetization approach.

    • “There are no microtransactions, which is a plus.”
