Axe Cop

Axe Cop isn’t perfect, but I also found it mostly charming. Sure there are additions I’d appreciate, such as items to keep foes away for a period of time. I’d also love an auto-battle option for extensive dungeons. And sure, there are glitches and some odd design choices. But overall, this is a very solid game, and it reminded me fondly of the stuff developed by Zeboyd Games. It’s a short, linear, funny, and entertaining experience, and one sure to keep fans of the comic happy. In the end, I actually enjoyed the game more than the source material. But even if you’re not a fan and just like classic styled RPGs, I’d give Axe Cop a look.

  • The game is a loving homage to retro JRPGs with excellent pixel art and a terrific chiptune soundtrack that enhances the nostalgic feel.
  • It faithfully adapts the Axe Cop comics, delivering a complete, humorous, and engaging story that appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers.
  • The turn-based combat system is creative and well-balanced, featuring variety in moves, stat customization, and strategic party member abilities.
  • Some levels and dungeons are excessively large and repetitive, causing pacing issues and making navigation difficult without a map.
  • The game lacks some modern quality-of-life features such as voice acting, auto-battle, save-anywhere functionality, and better navigation aids.
  • Certain puzzles are overly complex and time-consuming, and some game mechanics or achievements are poorly explained or buggy, which may frustrate players.
  • story

    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in this game is praised for its comprehensive and faithful adaptation of the Axe Cop series, blending wacky, childlike logic with clever plot connections that appeal to both fans and newcomers. It offers a large, engaging narrative filled with humor and well-integrated characters, though some feel the dialogue can be excessive at times. Overall, the story is considered a strong, enjoyable highlight that captures the original tone brilliantly.

    • “Thankfully this game does a fantastic job of showcasing every major storyline and character that ever appeared in the series while cleverly tying plot threads together to form a complete and satisfying story that'll appeal to longtime fans and welcome newcomers like myself to the crazy world of Axe Cop!”
    • “Wacky characters and plot points are introduced with no warning, but it does it in a way that feels consistent with the rules of this whimsical universe, and by the end it goes to great lengths to connect all the dots.”
    • “What at first seems like a beat-for-beat retelling of the Axe Cop webcomics and printed books unravels into a game-original story which always stays true to the tone of the original works by the Nicolle brothers.”
    • “Add in all the ridiculous plot devices and logic you would use if you were a 5-year-old boy playing with toys, and you get some semblance of the tone of the story.”
    • “I understand these games are meant to be story-driven, but there is such thing as too much dialogue, not enough gameplay.”
    • “This is not a good way to get the story of Axe Cop.”
  • music

    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music features an excellent retro chiptune soundtrack heavily inspired by NES and Game Boy Color-era RPGs, praised for its nostalgic and engaging quality. However, repetitive looping and lack of distinct battle themes during random encounters can become tiring over time. Unique musical elements, such as character-specific songs that affect gameplay, add a creative and memorable touch.

    • “It has an amazing chiptune soundtrack, excellent pixel art, and a pretty entertaining combat system.”
    • “It takes a lot of inspiration from NES and Game Boy Color-era RPGs for its visuals and music - the soundtrack is terrific, by the way, a must-hear if you're into chiptune music.”
    • “It has the NES vibe, music is on point, lots of cut scenes and mini games throughout so far.”
    • “I recommend you grow tolerance for 10-second loops of music driving you mad.”
    • “Also, the random encounters do not have their own fight music.”
    • “You just keep hearing the dungeon music loop forever and on and on.”
  • humor

    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is widely praised for its witty, absurd, and sometimes juvenile style that aligns well with its source material, offering a laugh-out-loud experience especially for fans of the original comic. Its nostalgic, old-school RPG vibe enhances the comedic effect, though the humor can occasionally feel childish or cringe-worthy. Overall, it delivers a charming and entertaining comedic narrative that complements the gameplay.

    • “The writing is humorous, well written, and has some pretty great moments so far.”
    • “This game continues that legacy quite well, and if you don't mind a bit of juvenile humor here and there, it can be a laugh riot at times.”
    • “When the story is taken with the understanding that an older brother is drawing and interpreting his younger brother's imagination, this game becomes utterly hilarious!”
  • graphics

    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics feature a charming 8-bit, retro-inspired art style reminiscent of classic NES and Game Boy Color RPGs, delivering nostalgic and fun visuals. The overworld character sprites evoke a "Legend of Zelda" vibe, complementing the game's goofy, creative theme with quality artwork that clearly reflects passion and care.

    • “The art style for the overworld character sprites gives me major 'Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening & Oracle of Ages/Seasons' vibe and I love it!”
    • “It takes a lot of inspiration from NES and Game Boy Color-era RPGs for its visuals and music - the soundtrack is terrific, by the way, a must-hear if you're into chiptune music.”
    • “The faux-retro graphics are another reason I even looked at this game.”
  • gameplay

    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay offers deep and strategic turn-based JRPG combat with customizable party and leveling options, enhancing replayability. However, some players find the game poorly teaches certain mechanics and is bogged down by excessive dialogue, leading to a less balanced gameplay experience. Overall, it blends engaging story elements with solid combat but could improve in pacing and tutorial clarity.

    • “The turn-based gameplay brings a lot of depth and strategy, and the dialogue/story is hilarious and engaging.”
    • “The gameplay takes the form of turn-based JRPG combat, with free selection of party configuration and level-up growths making playthroughs of the game very customizable.”
    • “So, to recap: great, balanced gameplay.”
    • “In other words, the game does a terrible job at teaching you a mechanic, doesn't make use of it for 15 hours, and then expects you to remember it.”
    • “I understand these games are meant to be story-driven, but there is such a thing as too much dialogue and not enough gameplay.”
    • “Of course, there's more to an RPG's gameplay than just the combat.”
  • character development

    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development is uniquely shaped by the imaginative perspective of a child, resulting in unconventional twists and distinctive designs that some may find unusual but ultimately add to the game's charm.

  • grinding

    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect is seen as excessive and potentially frustrating, as poor party composition and leveling choices can trap players in a repetitive cycle of grinding for experience without clear ways to progress or improve.

    • “Also, I have a feeling that the developers didn't really account for player choice involving a lot of matters which might screw over some players, particularly party composition and leveling up choices, meaning that you can get stuck in a perpetual grinding machine for XP and levels without some means to meaningfully improve your situation.”
  • stability

    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game experiences occasional glitches and features some questionable design choices, which affect its overall stability.
