Auto Age: Standoff

The driving is solid, the combat is ok, but the theme is excellent and it’s all surrounded by a game that just feels lacking. I love what the developers are going for here, but it feels like a huge squandered opportunity.

The graphics of the game are characterized by a vibrant, cartoonish aesthetic that draws heavily from 80s retro themes, reminiscent of titles like Borderlands and Twisted Metal. While many players appreciate the cel-shaded art style and the nostalgic visuals, opinions vary, with some finding the graphics merely good but not impressive, and others praising the overall artistic execution and thematic consistency. Overall, the game's visuals contribute positively to its fun and engaging atmosphere, particularly for fans of retro aesthetics.

    • “The cel-shaded art style is likely to scale down well for those with less potent hardware.”
    • “Auto Age: Standoff is an action multiplayer game where you take control of one of eight cars in frantic driving battles set in a colorful 80s-style cartoon graphics.”
    • “Can't recommend it, the servers are empty, the mechanics, game modes, physics and visuals are awful.”
    • “The graphics never impressed me.”
    • “None of them look cool either, which doesn't go well with the amount of flair that the rest of the game has with its 80s aesthetic.”
  • music
    34 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many players praising its nostalgic 80s synthwave and rock influences that enhance the overall experience. The soundtrack is described as one of the best heard in recent years, contributing significantly to the game's fun and vibrant atmosphere, despite some criticism of the main menu music. Overall, the combination of catchy tunes and retro aesthetics creates a captivating and enjoyable auditory experience for players.

    • “The 80s themed soundtrack was one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard all year, and is up there with some of the best.”
    • “This game has got the songs (80s synthwave/outrun + oldschool rock) and also the neon artworks that made me fall in love with this game.”

  • gameplay
    28 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is generally praised for its fun mechanics, reminiscent of Rocket League, featuring intuitive controls, tight handling, and engaging jump/boost mechanics. Players enjoy the fast-paced, chaotic nature of the game, especially in local multiplayer settings, though some express concerns about a lack of diversity in gameplay modes and the absence of a campaign. While the aesthetics and core mechanics receive positive feedback, issues like server emptiness and occasional crashes detract from the overall experience.

    • “It's got some really fantastic mechanics, the driving feels great, and you can jump and move around mid-air with boosts, which feels very similar to Rocket League.”
    • “This game has gameplay mechanics very similar to those of Rocket League, such as car jump, thrust forward, and control over your car's orientation in mid-air, but instead of playing a giant football, you blow up the enemies' cars!”
    • “The handling is tight, the jump/boost mechanic works awesome, and the targeting is perfect, just enough assist without taking away the feeling of aiming yourself.”
    • “Can't recommend it, the servers are empty, the mechanics, game modes, physics, and visuals are awful.”
    • “There is no campaign beyond the tutorial and there is oh so much that could be done with the storyline, world, and gameplay features.”
    • “I've had three crashes in less than a half hour of gameplay, and my system meets the requirements.”
  • story
    18 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is limited to the tutorial, which serves as the sole narrative experience, featuring engaging characters and a fun, 80's cartoon-inspired backdrop. While the tutorial effectively introduces the game's world and character development, players express disappointment over the lack of a full campaign, feeling that the potential for a deeper storyline is largely untapped. Overall, the tutorial is well-received for its voice acting and emotional engagement, but it leaves players wanting more substantial content beyond multiplayer battles.

    • “The tutorial tells you the story, gives you dialogue, and puts an emotional attachment to the fight.”
    • “The tutorial launches a highly entertaining story mocking 80's cartoons.”

    • “The depth of character development truly enhances the overall narrative, making each character's journey feel personal and impactful.”
    • “I was impressed by how the character arcs evolved throughout the game, allowing for a rich and immersive experience.”
