Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All! 2

Asterix and Obelix slap them all may not be the longest of games or the deepest of games, it does pack a lot of fun into the package. Is this game on the same level as Streets of Rage 4? No but what it does it does well and I would recommend it to fans of the franchise and people looking for a chilled out Co-op game to play. With its short length (most complete in about 4-6 hours, it also does not overstay its welcome.

  • The game features a vibrant and charming visual style that captures the essence of the Asterix comics, making it a delight for fans.
  • Gameplay improvements, such as the removal of energy costs for heavy attacks and the introduction of special moves, enhance the fun and freedom of combat.
  • Local co-op play adds a lively dynamic, allowing players to enjoy the game together and experience the humor and camaraderie of Asterix and Obelix.
  • The game suffers from repetition, with many enemy types and combat mechanics feeling recycled from the first installment, leading to a lack of depth.
  • Technical issues, including crashes and poor controller support, detract from the overall experience and enjoyment of the game.
  • The campaign is notably short, with some players completing it in just a few hours, leaving little incentive for replayability.
  • story
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it unremarkable and stale, particularly criticizing the cutscenes and animation timing. However, others appreciate the humor and environmental storytelling, noting that the narrative is engaging and enhanced by voice acting, making it more enjoyable despite its brevity. Overall, while the story may lack depth, it offers a lighthearted experience that resonates with fans of the genre.

    • “Not only is it very well done, it also brings a lot to the game: it's easier to get into the story, the jokes are more fun, and it fills the void during the dialogues.”
    • “+ better story with comic novels also have voice acting this time”
    • “Story: good”
    • “The cutscenes are incredibly stale and the story is unremarkable.”
    • “My only gripe is that the animation timing direction isn't great, with even stretched story cutscene sprites appearing in-game feeling oddly out of place despite being drawn in the same style.”
    • “What is this, a story for ants?”
  • gameplay
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is rooted in a traditional beat 'em up formula, featuring repetitive combat against waves of similar enemies and limited mechanical depth, which detracts from the overall experience. While there are attempts at variety in boss fights and stage design, the gameplay loop remains largely unchanged, leading to a tedious experience. Despite its shortcomings, the lively soundtrack complements the slapstick nature of the game, though it ultimately falls short of competing with more sophisticated entries in the genre.

    • “The gameplay follows the traditional beat ’em up formula: moving from left to right, clearing waves of Roman soldiers, pirates, brigands, and an assortment of foes who all seem determined to stand between the Gauls and their objectives.”
    • “The soundtrack stays lively, leaning into energetic tunes that match the slapstick nature of the gameplay.”
    • “However, the game’s greatest weaknesses stem from repetition and limited mechanical depth.”
    • “Even with the attempt at variety across stages, the gameplay loop rarely evolves beyond defeating large groups of similar enemies using the same handful of combos.”
    • “Its shortcomings—namely repetitive combat and shallow mechanical depth—keep it from standing alongside the genre’s more sophisticated entries, but it doesn’t really aim for that spot.”
  • graphics
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game are generally praised for their sharpness and fidelity to the comic book art style, effectively capturing the charm of the original material and the animated series. However, some users noted issues with technical performance, including crashes during gameplay, which detracted from the overall experience. While the visuals are appealing, the lack of advanced graphical options and the stale cutscenes were criticized.

    • “Graphics are good and faithful to the comic books, and the voices (in French) are somewhat decent imitations of the characters' voices in the classic animated series.”
    • “One of the coolest games I've played in recent years... the graphics genre is my favorite, with very clever dialogues and nice sounds.”
    • “The game's art style stays true not just to the comics but also to the animated films, making it feel like it's from a bygone era of gaming that was actually fun and genuine.”
    • “No volume settings, no button configuration, no graphic options, etc. The cutscenes are incredibly stale and the story is unremarkable.”
    • “Graphics: cartoon”
    • “While the game makes a good effort to keep things fresh with environmental storytelling and sharp visuals, it doesn’t introduce the kind of deeper progression systems, unlockable moves, or elaborate combos that modern beat ’em ups sometimes incorporate.”
  • humor
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by exaggerated boss personalities and attack patterns that align with the franchise's tone, creating a spirited and enjoyable experience, especially in multiplayer. Players appreciate the well-written characters, amusing moves, and a comical storyline, particularly when playing with a friend. Overall, the game delivers a highly entertaining and funny atmosphere.

    • “Boss encounters bring additional flavor, with exaggerated personalities and attack patterns that fit the humor and tone of the franchise.”
    • “Instead, it thrives as a spirited, humorous romp best enjoyed casually or with a friend in tow.”
    • “Very funny to play with another player.”
  • replayability
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers moderate replayability through collectibles, branching pathways, and optional objectives, appealing to players who enjoy mastering increasing difficulty. However, the lack of online co-op and limited unlockables may hinder the overall replay experience, making it feel brief for some players.

    • “Overall, I think this game is fun and has replay value if you are the type to advance in difficulty to truly master a game.”
    • “Collectibles, branching pathways, and small optional objectives add a layer of replay value, even if they don’t dramatically alter the core experience.”
    • “The absence of online co-op also marginally restricts replayability, as the game’s strengths are most apparent when shared with another player.”
    • “Beat 'em ups have never been lengthy games, but with nothing to unlock and no replay value, this feels awfully brief.”
  • stability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users report significant stability issues, with instances of complete freezes occurring during gameplay, indicating that the game may be quite buggy.

    • “I experienced a complete freeze during our second game, which indicates that the game is quite buggy.”

    • “The soundtrack stays lively, leaning into energetic tunes that match the slapstick nature of the gameplay.”
  • grinding
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding aspect of the game tedious due to layering issues with sprites during combat, which can hinder the experience. Additionally, the scarcity of health and food drops contributes to a frustrating grind, making progression feel slow and challenging.

    • “There are some layering issues with sprites that can make combat tedious.”
    • “Health and food drops throughout the gameplay are far too scarce.”
  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game delivers a heartfelt tribute to two iconic European cartoon characters, evoking strong emotional connections without necessarily innovating within its genre.

    • “It may not reinvent the genre, but it offers a heartfelt and entertaining homage to two of Europe's most beloved cartoon heroes.”
