Ancient Enemy
Ancient Enemy surprised me greatly — I don’t always gravitate towards card-based RPGs, but Ancient Enemy showed me that I’ve clearly been missing out. A seemingly casual experience that sucks you in once you start, Ancient Enemy is the perfect game for players who don’t have a lot of time on their hands but still want a solid gaming session. If card-based RPGs are your thing, you’re definitely going to want to add this to your library; if you’ve ever wondered about the genre, this is the perfect title to wet your beak. As far as I’m concerned, Ancient Enemy is a must buy, and you’ll do yourself a disservice if you don’t give it a go.

- story320 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
The story in this game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it basic and lacking depth compared to previous titles like Shadowhand. While some appreciate the dark fantasy setting and the protagonist's introspective monologues, others criticize the linear narrative, repetitive character graphics, and minimal character development, leading to a feeling that the story is skippable or unengaging. Overall, the gameplay mechanics are praised, but the story is often seen as a weak point that detracts from the overall experience.
“Once again they've taken a seemingly very simple core of traditional solitaire and made it quite involving and strategic feeling with added mechanics and variations and a story/narrative that ties things together and provides motivation while being restrained enough to allow focus to remain on playing the game rather than watching cutscenes and clicking through dialogue.”
“The storyline of the brooding mage in his post-apocalyptic world seeking out his enemy is well told in quick snippets as you move from level to level.”
“Easily the best game yet by Grey Alien Games, thoroughly enjoyable solitaire game that's snappy, thoughtful and varied gameplay mechanics with a compelling story and strategic combat, what more could you want, highly recommend.”
“There is no plot at all.”
“The story is all but nonexistent, and the art is pretty mediocre.”
“The story segments have a lot less character to them than Shadowhand did.”

Ancient Enemy isn’t bad, and is one of the better ways you can reinvent Solitaire-esque games. But it is still a Solitaire-esque game, and that makes it hard to recommend to anyone who isn’t a fan of the genre. Add that with the resistances and inventory mechanics slowing down the game proper, and it’s a tough sell. If everything I mentioned here sounds appealing, give it a shot. Everyone else, proceed with caution.
