The gameplay of "ak-xolotl" has received mixed reviews, with some praising its fun and addictive bullet-hell mechanics, charming visuals, and solid core gameplay, especially after recent updates. However, many players criticize the repetitive nature of runs, lack of meaningful variety in character abilities, and unbalanced mechanics that detract from the overall experience. While the game offers a cute aesthetic and some unique features, it often feels shallow and unpolished compared to its inspirations, leading to a gameplay loop that can become dull over time.
“This title has a lot to love about it; the bullet-hell gameplay is really fun and addictive, the visual style is adorable, and there are tons of different weapons and items to find.”
“The gameplay is solid: the guns feel good to shoot, the movement is precise and satisfying to weave through the several bullet hells you’re faced with, it’s a game where any veteran of twin-stick shooters will feel right at home with.”
“The gameplay is fun and addicting, the new loot and resource drop/cost rebalancing improved it a lot and the devs already are working on plenty of our feedbacks in their roadmap.”
“More concerning is the willingness to shamefully imitate the aesthetic and gameplay of successful predecessors, while being egregiously worse in every way.”
“The run-to-run gameplay is incredibly same-y, the memes are a weird and forced addition, and the whole 'cute and cuddly seeming thing is actually violent/evil/super badass' shtick is tired.”
“Even unlocking new axolotls to play as is boring - most of them have identical stats and skills to one another, making it difficult to find any that have a meaningful impact on the gameplay.”

“The visuals, gameplay, and cuteness of the axolotls come together in an exceptional gaming experience.”
“The game's artistry and aesthetics create a captivating world filled with personality and a lot of little secrets to discover aside from the gameplay itself.”
“More concerning is the willingness to shamefully imitate the aesthetic and gameplay of successful predecessors, while being egregiously worse in every way.”
“The graphical options are also limited, having only resolution and fullscreen/borderless options.”
“There are almost no settings; you cannot change much graphics-wise or key-binds as far as I could tell.”

The grinding aspect of the game has received significant criticism, with many players finding it excessively tedious and unenjoyable. Unlocking new weapons and upgrades requires a substantial amount of time spent farming resources, often leading to repetitive gameplay and a lack of incentive to explore harder routes. While some improvements have been noted, the overall sentiment is that the grind detracts from the fun and progression, making the early game particularly frustrating.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“I normally love bullet hells, but this game is grindy and unenjoyable.”
“The grinding is very heavy for a game with a miserable early game, which practically screams not to play.”
“My main gripe with the game is that it feels the developer took some wrong lessons from other games of this sort and decided to make unlocking new power-ups and weapons exceedingly difficult and grindy, where unless a player is good enough at the game to beat it consistently, they will soon find themselves struggling to gather the currency required to purchase new things.”

“The music suffers a lot of the same uninspired feel as the rest of the game.”
“In my opinion, the visual style and soundtrack aren't that good, too.”

The game's story is described as minimal and simplistic, primarily revolving around rescuing children and reclaiming stolen food, with some players noting a lack of depth beyond a charming introductory cutscene. While the narrative is often overshadowed by gameplay, it features a whimsical and humorous tone reminiscent of other indie titles. “The game opens with a rather cute story-board style animation complete with a faux 'nature documentary' narration.”
“As for the story here, think John Wick’s revenge tale but instead of a tiny dog, food and babies, but more importantly food, were taken.”
“Narrative: no big story, just rescue your children and steal back your stolen food.”
“They really should've focused more on the story, but the implementation of the Hades heat system and the heart farming shows promise.”
“This game is very cute and is very similar to a game like Hades, but doesn't really have a story after the silly beginning cutscene.”

The game's replayability is a mixed bag; while it offers some charm and variety through unlockable upgrades and different builds, many players feel it lacks depth and content to sustain long-term engagement. The introduction of a heat system and a wide array of items and guns adds potential for replay value, but some find the current modifiers uninteresting and the overall replayability insufficient for a roguelike. Overall, while there are enjoyable elements that encourage multiple playthroughs, significant improvements are needed to enhance replayability.
“The game might not have 200+ hour Enter the Gungeon levels of replay value, but the charm is definitely there.”
“Roguelike and achievements, so there is some good replay value here in unlocking all the upgrades, guns, and experimenting with different builds.”
“Wide variety of items and guns provide plenty of combos to have fun with and take advantage of - good replayability.”
“To start, there is absolutely no replayability.”
“For a roguelike/rougelite, I would expect a game that has a lot of replay value, or a grand challenge that takes a lot of effort, but I didn't find much of either.”
“It has loads of potential, but the lack of content and replayability is holding it back.”
