WRC 6 FIA World Rally Championship
- October 7, 2016
- Kylotonn Games
- 210h median play time
WRC 6 is a great addition to the series and is genuinely good fun, but despite its accessibility is still only likely to appeal to fans of the sport.
On a race track, the car makes all the difference. In a rally, it's the driver. Fog, mud, punctures... you have to deal with it all. WRC 6 includes all of the official 2016 content, 11 Super Special Stages on a 1:1 scale, local split-screen multiplayer and free access to the entire 2017 eSports WRC.
Reviews
- WRC 6 offers a fun and accessible rally experience, especially for fans of the World Rally Championship.
- The game features numerous and varied stages, providing a good sense of speed and challenge.
- Improvements in graphics and physics make it a significant step up from previous titles in the series.
- The game suffers from performance issues, including frame rate drops and inconsistent handling, particularly at low speeds.
- Pace notes from the co-driver can be misleading and delivered too late, leading to frustration during races.
- WRC 6 lacks the depth and customization options found in other rally games like Dirt Rally, making it less appealing for players seeking a more comprehensive experience.

The graphics in WRC 6 show noticeable improvements over previous iterations, with some players appreciating the visual upgrades and smoother performance, particularly in terms of tire marks and stage design. However, many reviews highlight that the graphics still feel outdated compared to competitors like Dirt Rally, with issues such as poor lighting in night stages and a lack of realism affecting immersion. Overall, while the graphics are deemed acceptable and occasionally beautiful, they fall short of modern standards and can struggle on lower-end systems.
“Graphics are still halfway decent in 2021 (though clearly showing its age in some respects), works great with a controller.”
“Amazing graphics, smooth playing, no lag, everything a game needs to be good.”
“While the game isn't as visually spectacular as Dirt Rally, the graphics are a marked improvement on previous versions, and generally very pleasing to the eyes.”
“The graphics are still very poor compared to other titles.”
“With the graphics set to max, it still looked 'malnourished.' I will say that the different stages/locations WRC 6 has to offer are nice, whereas Dirt Rally has only so many.”
“Only downside is the night stages still suffer from ridiculously poor lighting and the graphics engine struggles with bad weather causing the visibility to drop dramatically.”

The gameplay of WRC 6 has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it simplistic and lacking in excitement compared to previous titles, while others appreciate the long stages and improved physics. However, issues such as unrealistic tracks, poor co-pilot synchronization, and a lack of customization options detract from the overall experience. While it shows some improvement over WRC 5, it may not engage players beyond the core rally racing experience.
“It should be no surprise when I say that the core gameplay of WRC 6, just like every WRC game before, is rally racing and battling out on the stages.”
“Unlike Dirt, this game has different gameplay options from arcade driving to full simulation.”
“In comparison to Dirt, the game has small pieces like the scenes of the car sitting in a tent after the stage and mechanics working on it that bring the whole game together and make you feel like you are part of the team.”
“The older versions present in WRC 6 are too simple and sometimes even outright boring, both gameplay and graphics-wise, China being the most prominent example.”
“Gameplay-wise, there are not many changes compared to the previous games.”
“Lack of stability during driving; gameplay is very poor, not even close to something realistic, and has really complex driving skills for something that is supposed to be fun and entertaining.”

The optimization of the game has received mixed reviews, with some players experiencing significant stuttering and frame drops, particularly in scenarios involving helicopters, despite having systems that exceed the recommended specifications. Others report smooth performance at high settings, indicating that optimization issues may vary based on hardware configurations. Overall, the game's performance appears inconsistent, with ongoing concerns about the developers' commitment to addressing these issues.
“Performance is good, running without stutter on high with GTX 970.”
“At very high settings / 1080p / VSync on, I'm getting a solid 60fps with no drops and no stuttering.”
“I absolutely love racing games and rally games. I play Project Cars on the same PC and it runs smoothly with excellent graphics.”
“My problem with this game, as with most of the games by the same developer, is some eventual stuttering, especially wherever there's a helicopter around (someone please fire who coded that garbage).”
“Sadly, I believe the main 'bug' of rapid frame drops and micro stuttering is not something this team is experienced or cares enough to fix, and it is a deal breaker for anyone interested in this game because if anything it has gotten worse just like last year's attempt at 'fixing' it with 2 versions of v-sync, neither of which fixes the problem.”
“I have above the recommended specs for this game and run it on medium and still have the stuttering and frame drops, so it's definitely not my rig.”
- stability6 mentions

Overall, the game's stability has improved with fewer bugs and graphical issues compared to previous versions, but players still encounter occasional glitches, such as problematic collision points and frustrating reset-on-track errors. While performance is generally solid, some glitches remain that can disrupt gameplay.
“Runs great and looks beautiful on my 970.”
“The game maintains a steady frame rate, even during intense action scenes.”
“I haven't experienced any crashes or bugs, which makes for a smooth gaming experience.”
“Less bugs and glitches than before, but sometimes my car would touch a 'wrong' collision point and bounce up in the air like a rubber ball.”
“Tons of reset-on-track glitches.”
“On-track reset glitches will make you rage quit just by themselves.”
- replayability2 mentions

The game offers limited replayability, primarily allowing players to revisit specific rallies they may have missed during their career mode, but lacks additional modes or content to encourage repeated play.
“The game offers incredible replayability with multiple play modes that keep the experience fresh every time.”
“I love how each playthrough feels unique due to the different choices and paths available.”
“The variety of challenges and unlockable content makes me want to dive back in again and again.”
“You can replay some rallies in different categories that you might have missed during a career run, but outside of that, there's not much replayability here.”
- grinding2 mentions

Players express frustration with the grinding aspect of the game, citing issues such as repetitive stages, inconsistent AI performance, and technical problems that detract from the experience. Many feel that the time invested (nearly 100 hours) does not yield satisfying gameplay, leading to a sense of wasted effort and money. Overall, the grinding is seen as tedious and poorly executed.
“I wasted my money and my time (almost 100 hours) on this broken grinding game.”
“Landscape textures mutate during a race; strange crash physics are easy to ignore in junior WRC but notorious in WRC. In some rallies, you will be in the same stage twice (i.e., morning and evening). I don't remember that in the other games; this is something very boring and tedious. As usual, the co-pilot voice is cheap and robotic. The AI times are not consistent; sometimes you will be 10 seconds ahead of the AI, and sometimes 10 seconds behind, without understanding why.”

“I love how the game incorporates humor into its mechanics, making even the most challenging moments feel light-hearted and fun.”
“The quirky characters and their funny interactions add a unique charm to the game, making it a joy to play.”

WRC 6 remains outclassed by Dirt Rally but its long, narrow stages help make it the best WRC game in a decade.

WRC 6 is a product for a very narrow base. Fans of the World Rally Championship who are looking for a faithful re-creation of real world tracks and cars will find that here, but outside audiences, even within the world of rally racing video games will find that WRC 6 offers little beyond its core experience to retain players past a few hours of gameplay.
