Terminator 2D: NO FATE

The Good: Impeccable pixel art and animation that lovingly recreate memorable scenes from the iconic film. Excellent interpretation of the film's score and a few amusing bits of licensed songs used in the bar scene. Expanded scenes inspired by offhand references in the film is tasteful fan service. Alternate routes from changing the timeline is novel and exciting. Plenty of modes and replay value. The Bad: Without the Terminator 2 connection, this is a pretty bog-standard action platformer. Vignette gameplay makes the experience feel fragmented. Not enough Terminators and 'Uncle Bob', is not in it as much as you'd expect. Too short and could have gone further with the Terminator 2 license.

  • Excellent pixel art and animations that authentically capture the Terminator 2 movie aesthetic and 90s arcade game vibe.
  • Fun and varied arcade-style gameplay blending run 'n gun action with unique levels like stealth, beat 'em up, and vehicle pursuits.
  • Great soundtrack including remixed tracks from the movie and licensed songs enhancing the nostalgic atmosphere.
  • The main story mode is very short, typically completable within an hour, leading to limited content for the asking price.
  • Limited gameplay as the Terminator T-800 with most levels played as Sarah Connor or John Connor; some iconic movie scenes are missing or reduced to cutscenes.
  • Some players find the difficulty balance uneven with frustrating boss encounters and limited continues leading to repeated restarts.

The game's story closely follows the Terminator 2 movie, offering a faithful and nostalgic experience with multiple playable characters and iconic locations. Although the main story is quite short—completable in about an hour—it includes branching paths and alternate endings unlocked through replay, providing some additional content and replayability. However, some players find the story mode's length and depth limited, with alternate routes offering only slight variations, and the overall story experience feeling somewhat underdeveloped for the price.

    • “Absolutely nails the Terminator 2 atmosphere and SNES with Contra-esque mechanics, branching storylines, and chase sequences to mix it up.”
    • “It tells the story in a good order and makes fun.”
    • “The pixel art is gorgeous, the music absolutely nails the vibe, and the way the story is stitched together with unique gameplay twists is spot-on.”
    • “The story branching happens quite late in the game (after level 8 out of 12+), and makes very little difference other than adding a few extra levels, most of which are alternate-protagonist remixes of levels that you have already played through on that same story path.”
    • “The main story is way too short, and can be completed in around 40-60 minutes on any ending.”
    • “It's waaaaay too short, the story is lame, offers nothing new, and isn't even fun.”

The gameplay of "Terminator 2D: No Fate" is a polished, tight, and nostalgic run-and-gun experience reminiscent of classic arcade and 16-bit games like Contra, featuring varied level designs and mechanics that keep it engaging. While praised for its smooth controls, fluid mechanics, and faithful homage to the source material, many reviewers find the gameplay basic, repetitive, and notably short—often completing within 1-2 hours—leading to concerns about its value given the price. Overall, it offers fun, accessible gameplay for retro and Terminator fans but lacks depth and lasting challenge for those seeking a more substantial or varied experience.

    • “One of the best run and gun shooters I've ever played, especially the arcade style gameplay, really adds to the longevity of this game because if you could retry without restarting, it would honestly be like a 1 hour game or so.”
    • “The gameplay is polished, intuitive and responsive.”
    • “Each level delivers a different kind of gameplay, from side scrolling contra style run and gun, stealth sections and driving sequences.”
    • “I don't recommend this game because you get to play as the T-800 like twice; most of the gameplay is scenes that aren't even from the movie. You can beat half of the levels by just holding down the attack button.”
    • “This game is simply terrible: an empty, soulless shell defined by repetitive gameplay and uninspired elements.”
    • “A perfect score for style and presentation can't save Terminator 2D: No Fate from its abysmal gameplay, which is made up of all the worst aspects of the SNES era that nostalgia usually filters out.”
  • music

    217 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
55% positive mentions, 43% neutral mentions, 2% negative mentions

The music in this game is widely praised for its excellent, authentic soundtrack that perfectly captures the iconic Terminator 2 themes with a nostalgic 16-bit arcade vibe. Reviewers highlight the inclusion of original movie tracks and licensed songs, which significantly enhance the atmosphere and immersion, often calling the soundtrack a standout feature or worth the purchase alone. Overall, the soundtrack’s faithful adaptation and energetic compositions strongly complement the visuals and gameplay, creating a memorable and authentic retro experience.

    • “The soundtrack is amazing, including the iconic original Terminator 2 theme.”
    • “The pixel art is gorgeous and perfectly captures that gritty retro vibe, and the synthwave twist on the classic T2 soundtrack is the icing on the cake — it genuinely elevates the atmosphere.”
    • “The music was a big surprise. I figured it would be fine and fit the theme, no more and no less, but in a game where everything is grabbing your attention, the music outright steals it at times.”
    • “The music is also remixed in a way I don't like; it doesn't have much to do anymore with the powerful drums and concerning violins of the movie's main theme.”
    • “Now the game... good repetitive music, great graphics as expected, but gameplay so far is the lower part of okay.”
    • “I wonder if the devs paid for a perpetual license for the music, or if this game will start digitally delisting parts of itself a year from now.”
  • graphics

    118 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
59% positive mentions, 38% neutral mentions, 3% negative mentions

The graphics are widely praised for their stunning, authentic 16-bit pixel art style that perfectly captures the retro arcade aesthetic and iconic scenes from the Terminator franchise. Detailed, atmospheric visuals and animations evoke strong nostalgia, creating a perfect tribute to classic 80s-90s games. While some find the pixel art charming and faithful, a few note it may not appeal to those preferring modern visuals, though overall the art style is considered a major highlight.

    • “The visuals, music, atmosphere, and overall execution perfectly capture the classic Terminator feel.”
    • “The scenes chosen from the movies for this game are perfectly recreated in its amazing pixel art style.”
    • “The presentation, high fidelity of the graphics, and pounding sound evoke all the feels of a cabinet of that era; as an elder millennial who played with T2 action figures as a kid, this is about as perfect as it gets.”
    • “While there are a few nostalgic moments, the arcade style and pixel graphics kill the vibe.”
    • “They are graphically boring, and the design feels kind of generic.”
    • “The graphics look awful, much too low resolution.”
  • replayability

    72 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
39% positive mentions, 57% neutral mentions, 4% negative mentions

The game offers solid replayability through branching story paths, multiple difficulty levels, alternate endings, and various additional modes such as score challenges and boss rushes. Although the main campaign is relatively short, these features, along with achievements and leaderboards, encourage multiple playthroughs, especially appealing to speedrunners and perfectionists. Some reviewers note that more content or longer levels would enhance replay value, but overall it provides engaging, arcade-style replayability reminiscent of classic side-scrollers.

    • “The fact that this game has branching paths on top of being highly replayable sets it apart from other similar games.”
    • “Even though the main story is quite short, the game compensates for that with replay value: alternate modes, different storylines based on the decisions you make, multiple difficulty levels, achievements, cheat codes.”
    • “Beyond the main playthroughs of the alternate routes the game offers different difficulties and an incredibly fun score system along with online leaderboards, so the majority of the replay value is for those interested in challenge and mastery where the game becomes even more fun and amazing playthrough after playthrough.”
    • “People are saying the replayability comes from the 'branching paths' (there are 2 choices in total which add a combined total of maybe 20 minutes, not including the fact you have to replay through the campaign again each time to choose the next branch) and the additional game modes which are just modifiers (no continues, just play as Sarah with the levels switched around).”
    • “There is a bit of replay value with the alternate paths, but I feel like it should have had a few more levels, or even some levels just being a bit longer.”
    • “The extra modes and branching story paths don't offer much in the way of replay value.”

The game masterfully captures the classic Terminator 2 atmosphere through its stunning pixel art, nostalgic synthwave soundtrack, and faithful 90s retro style. The visuals and audio combine to create a gritty, immersive mood that resonates with fans, evoking both adrenaline and affection for the franchise. While the difficulty and limited content are noted, the overall execution delivers a handcrafted, intense experience that celebrates the Terminator universe authentically.

    • “It is absolutely gorgeous and has a distinct visual identity that breathes so much mood and atmosphere into every single frame.”
    • “The pixel art is gorgeous and perfectly captures that gritty retro vibe, and the synthwave twist on the classic T2 soundtrack genuinely elevates the atmosphere.”
    • “The visuals, music, atmosphere, and overall execution perfectly capture the classic Terminator feel.”
    • “The pixel art and atmosphere work well, but the balance can feel rough and the amount of content is limited.”
    • “The atmosphere respects the Terminator universe rather than parodying it.”
    • “This title is very clearly, deliberately, and proudly designed as a classic 16-bit arcade-style experience, aimed squarely at players who grew up when games were judged on feel, challenge, atmosphere, and replayability — not on a stopwatch.”
  • optimization

25% positive mentions, 37% neutral mentions, 38% negative mentions

The game runs smoothly on handheld devices with solid performance and generally stable frame rates, offering a good experience even in low performance modes. However, optimization falters during intense moments with many sprites, causing frequent frame rate drops in boss fights and higher difficulties. Overall, while performance is generally good, the game struggles with optimization under heavy load.

    • “Perfect game to play on a handheld, mainly play this on my Ayn Thor, FPS is about 70-80 but I have it on low fan low performance mode.”
    • “Unfortunately, it's quite short, but aside from that it's really fun and the performance is excellent.”
    • “This game has issues when there are too many sprites and things going on screen, with frequent frame rate drops during boss fights and harder difficulties, so the optimization is quite questionable.”
    • “FPS is about 70-80 on my handheld device (Ayn Thor) with the game on low fan, low performance mode.”
    • “Performance is smooth.”
  • humor

The game's humor is highlighted by its playful, handcrafted details that elicit genuine laughter, especially through its ironic and unexpected twists on familiar characters. Players appreciate the intense, adrenaline-fueled fun combined with amusing references and quirky contrasts, creating a uniquely entertaining experience.

    • “One hour in this game: just nonstop fun and action, feeling the atmosphere, getting adrenaline pushed, laughing about another detail that makes you feel this is a handcrafted and intense game that 100% was made with love - and finally running out of continues (with no slot to insert a coin) into game over, but you just still love it and think "what a ride".”
    • “People complaining the game is too short with only 1 and a half hours clocked seem to be completely unaware of this which is hilarious.”
    • “There's something funny about the game depicting Sarah Connor going on a murder spree (antithetical to the movie) and apparently not being able to get the likeness to Arnold (but could license "Bad to the Bone"?).”
  • stability

The game demonstrates excellent stability across platforms, running smoothly on Linux and the Steam Deck without requiring configuration changes. It also performs well under the Steam Deck's power consumption limits, with notably good audio output from the handheld's speakers.

    • “Runs great on Linux out of the box; never changed from defaults.”
    • “Runs great on the Steam Deck with strict limits on power consumption on both the CPU and GPU.”
    • “Runs great on the Steam Deck, and it's one of the few games where the sound comes loud from the handheld's speakers.”
