About

The Creation Kit is a free downloadable editor that allows you to create mods for Skyrim and then share them with other players across Bethesda.net. It's the same tool that we use to create the game and we're putting the power to create new content in your hands - new quests, environments, characters, dialogue, weapons, and more.

  • stability
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The stability of the software is widely criticized, with users reporting frequent crashes, long loading times, and numerous bugs that complicate navigation and item placement. While some find joy in creating mods despite these issues, many express frustration over the program's unreliability and the need for community fixes to improve functionality. Overall, the experience is marred by significant stability problems that detract from its potential.

    • “Takes forever to load, is a pain to configure, buggy and has poor user interface.”
    • “This doesn't even begin to touch on how buggy it is simply navigating the render window and placing items; adjusting placements by very small increments is a nightmare.”
    • “Things like doors refusing to acknowledge their teleports which were previously working fine, teleport markers moving at random without being touched, havok issues, lights behaving weirdly even though they worked fine when I set them up, linked items unlinking despite the CK clearly displaying the link reference being completely unchanged, doors that just stop functioning and become wallpaper, landscape that alters itself even though I haven't even opened the landscaping on this mod, navigating the render window sometimes reads my tiny mouse movements as huge sweeping gestures which shoots the camera/selected item across the cell, adjusting item placements only for the item to deselect itself and refuse to be reselected, other things I've mentioned here, the frequent freezes/crashes, and more.”
  • story
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players frequently encounter issues with quest progression, particularly with the "Blood on the Ice" quest in Windhelm, which can become bugged and requires specific commands to advance. The complexity of modifying quest scenes due to technical limitations has discouraged some from engaging with the modding community, despite the potential for creating simpler quests. Overall, the story aspect is marred by these technical challenges, impacting player experience and creativity.

    • “I was super enthusiastic about modding Skyrim and I was even going to try working on a small quest line at one point, but this recent experience with the modding community and puzzle door issue has completely killed my motivation to work with this software and even speak to the modding community.”
    • “Now I can make 'quest mods' or something of that nature, at least simple fetch quests or delivery quests, etc.”
    • “+ you can create quests for your waifus/husbandos.”
    • “You often hear players having issues with a quest that doesn't properly detect progress.”
    • “A very well known quest to sporadically bug out is 'Blood on the Ice', which plays out in Windhelm.”
    • “You can't edit quest scenes due to a failure to register the flowchart DLL, and since almost all quests involve at least one scene, even if it's just talking to an NPC, quests are broken.”
  • gameplay
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Gameplay is noted for its complexity, requiring some effort to master the mechanics, but ultimately allows players to focus on content and design due to the engine handling many aspects. This separation of mechanics and design is highlighted as a positive feature, enhancing the overall experience.

    • “The gameplay is easy to grasp, allowing players to focus on content and design since the engine manages most of the existing game mechanics.”
    • “The separation of mechanics and design enhances the overall gameplay experience.”
    • “The gameplay mechanics can be tricky to grasp, but it's honestly not that bad either.”
    • “The engine handles most of the existing game mechanics, allowing players to focus on other aspects like content and design.”
    • “It's important to consider the separation of mechanics and design in the gameplay experience.”
  • graphics
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in the game have been criticized for causing flickering issues, particularly for users with NVIDIA graphics cards, necessitating a rollback to an older driver version (512.77) to resolve the problem. Additionally, there are concerns about the need for an epilepsy warning due to the visual effects.

    • “Should come with an epilepsy warning; fix that flickering. No, it's not the job of the graphics driver developer to do so.”
    • “If you have an NVIDIA graphics card (I have a GTX 1060) and the game gives you the flickering render screen issue, you have to roll back your graphics card driver to 512.77.”
  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players express a mix of frustration and self-reflection regarding the emotional impact of the game's challenges, feeling both challenged and occasionally foolish for missing obvious solutions. This duality contributes to a deeper engagement with the game's emotional landscape.

  • humor
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the humor in the game to be a highlight, often appreciating the unexpected and absurd moments, such as a wall humorously consuming their weapon. This blend of frustration and laughter adds a unique charm to the gameplay experience.

    • “While frustrating, I must say it was hilarious to activate the weapon plaque and see the wall eat my sword, not gonna lie.”
