gameplay
51 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe gameplay offers a mix of stealth and FPS elements, with some appreciating its unique blend and solid core mechanics, while others find the stealth simplistic, slow, and frustrating due to unpredictable enemy detection and weak combat. Though the game features tight controls and an interesting design, many critiques highlight repetitive, underpowered combat, lack of depth in progression, and occasional gameplay pacing issues. Overall, the experience is divisive but can be enjoyable if expectations are adjusted for its minimalistic and somewhat niche approach.
“The gameplay is fun and unique, the art style is great and I enjoyed the progression and boss fights.”
“The gameplay is very solid and the controls are tight.”
“This cyberpunk FPS offers redeeming qualities such as innovative gameplay with its mixture of stealth and shooting, and some funny dialogue.”
“Additionally, any and all enemies you don't kill will often unerringly come find you if you're noticed, and the mechanics for being noticed on any difficulty over easy are insane.”
“Unfortunately, it's the atrocious gameplay that almost fails to deliver, since the shooting is simply, well, pretty bad (movement, aiming and generally the whole setting is coded in a terrible way), and the stealth mechanics are rudimentary at best. Plus, why give a dash option if you can't truly dodge bullets (they will always find you)? The whole gameplay expects you to think of a more 'stealthy' solution, since it's impossible to win against more than two enemies.”
“The gameplay is also too slow for that, weapons feel very underpowered and the enemies always hit you when they shoot, even when 1 mile away.”
Critic Reviews
ROOT Review (PC)
ROOT is a hard first-person shooter, an experience clearly designed for players who love the classics of the genre and feel that modern releases are too cinematic and too focused on narrative for their good. For players who are ready to accept that death will be a constant companion and that the level design can often be convoluted, the title offers a few hours of fun and tension. The highlight is the way the game can transition from stealth to full combat in small places very quickly, with the firefights often won by the smallest of margins. Multiplayer would have also been interesting, given the very tight core mechanics and the way Deep Fried Enterprises can create intricate mazes for gamers to explore. ROOT is offered on the PC, Mac and Linux for 9.99 dollars or Euro, and the low price is one reason for long-time fans of the first-person shooter genre to try the experience created by Deep Fried Enterprises out and find a way to deal with its challenging levels.

Off the bat, I had a bad feeling about Deep Fried Enterprises’ ROOT as soon as I clicked play and the only option I had under “Graphics Options” was “On.”

Root Digital is another phenomenal adaptation that I have just scratched the surface of. The game has lowered the barrier of entry for many fans, and there are hours of fun challenges that I will enjoy continuing to explore. With a few small tweaks from the developer, this could be one of the best digital board games on the market.
