  • The game's atmosphere effectively conveys a strong sense of desolation and post-apocalyptic mood through its minimalist visual and sound design.
  • The retro-style graphics and dark color palette provide a unique, melancholic aesthetic that some players appreciate.
  • Infinite lives and the ability to continue from the last reached level offer a forgiving trial-and-error gameplay loop for those who enjoy a challenge.
  • Controls are generally unresponsive and awkward, with floaty movement and poor precision, making platforming frustrating.
  • Combat is limited by the inability to shoot upwards or diagonally while enemies attack from multiple angles, leading to unfair and repetitive damage.
  • Lack of customization and options (no key rebinding, no sound or display settings, no pause or checkpoint system) severely hampers accessibility and player comfort.
  • gameplay
    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay emphasizes atmosphere and vulnerability over mechanical precision, creating a somber, experimental experience focused on survival and mood. However, many find the controls floaty, platforming mechanics frustratingly imprecise, and overall gameplay lacking in fun or polish, with issues like no gamepad support further detracting from playability. This results in a gameplay experience that some appreciate for its thematic depth, while others criticize it as poorly executed and unenjoyable.

    • “It is a game of tone and mood first, gameplay second—a meditation on decay, emptiness, and survival.”
    • “This mechanic introduces a sense of vulnerability early on, as you are often defenseless in the initial sections, relying only on timing and positioning to survive.”
    • “Its world is bleak yet fascinating, and its mechanics, though imperfect, serve its central vision of fragility and survival.”
    • “There might be some kind of plot but it's too hard to tell through all the bad graphics and bad gameplay.”
    • “Very floaty controls, shooting mechanics that feel hollow and just not entertaining.”
    • “Random floating platforms provide no sense of progress combined with unclear solidity of platforms and visual consistency for environmental hazards lead to a haphazard mixture of gameplay.”
  • music
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game generally features sparse, eerie, and ambient melodies that fit the post-apocalyptic theme, offering a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for most players. However, some found the combat/dubstep track repetitive and less appealing, and the limited variety (only two main tracks) alongside annoying sound effects and lack of sound controls drew criticism. Overall, the soundtrack is a mixed experience, praised for mood-setting but hindered by repetition and audio options issues.

    • “The soundtrack complements this aesthetic with sparse, eerie melodies and ambient drones that evoke loneliness.”
    • “The soundtrack in general is enjoyable and doesn’t wear out over time; the exception is the track that triggers after you repair your weapon and get ready for the cube shooting phase. Initially enjoyable, it becomes very repetitive as the same loop repeats many minutes later.”
    • “The music is actually pretty good—at least until you pick up ammo and the combat song kicks in. Some may like it, and you can hear it in the trailer to decide for yourself.”
    • “Unfortunately, there only seem to be two music tracks.”
    • “Personally, I thought the background music was a bit repetitive after a while.”
    • “This means that there is no way to mute the music or any of the sound effects that are played in the game, and funnily enough the sound effects are very annoying bleeps.”
  • story
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is largely conveyed through environmental details and visual cues rather than traditional narrative or dialogue, emphasizing themes of isolation and a broken world. However, many users find the plot minimal, unclear, or underdeveloped, with some considering it almost nonexistent or poorly integrated into the gameplay. Overall, the story is seen as a weak and confusing aspect of the game.

    • “Rather than relying on cinematic storytelling or dialogue, the game conveys its themes through visual cues and environmental details, letting the bleak silence and isolation tell the story of a world beyond repair.”
    • “Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today.”
    • “Also, why you have to fix your gun after every level doesn’t make sense to me (from a story perspective).”
    • “There might be some kind of plot but it's too hard to tell through all the bad graphics and bad gameplay.”
    • “Cons: not a good game, unchangeable controls, bad art, boring game, no story, no settings to change.”
    • “Perhaps the developer should write a book and revise his story to truly create it into a story-driven adventure like he aims that it is.”
  • graphics
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics are generally seen as outdated and basic, using retro pixel art that some find charming but others consider low quality and lacking depth cues, which negatively impacts gameplay. There are no options to adjust or improve the graphics settings, leading to frustration for some players. Overall, the visual presentation is polarizing, with appreciation mainly from those who favor a nostalgic, old-school aesthetic.

    • “The largest problem is not with its looks directly but more about depth; when walking over the various platforms to reach the goal, there are objects that look like you can walk over them since they look the same by brightness and contrast as normal objects; this can lead to falling through because the developer hasn’t made a graphical difference in depth.”
    • “The graphics and animations are very basic.”
    • “The graphics are somewhat attractive, in a retro kind of way.”
    • “There might be some kind of plot but it's too hard to tell through all the bad graphics and bad gameplay.”
    • “A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel art as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics.”
    • “There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings.”
  • atmosphere
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere in Liveza: Death of the Earth is characterized by a stark, minimalist presentation that effectively conveys a sense of desolation and emptiness. While the sound design is basic and functional, the game’s haunting and understated ambiance stands out as its strongest element, despite a lower overall rating.

    • “Liveza: Death of the Earth is an experimental indie platformer that captures the desolation of a dying planet through its stark, minimalist presentation and haunting atmosphere.”
    • “Where Liveza truly succeeds is in its atmosphere.”
    • “4/10 atmosphere”
    • “The overall sound design is functional rather than elaborate—footsteps, gunfire, and explosions are presented in simple tones, grounding the atmosphere in an understated realism.”
    • “It is a game that dares to embrace emptiness as its defining feature, prioritizing atmosphere over mechanical polish.”

The humor is widely appreciated for being consistently funny and genuinely entertaining.

  • emotional
