JUJU

Believe it or not, traditional platformers are kind of a rarity on the Xbox 360. Majority of what's available in the genre is either puzzle oriented or an artistic experience concerned with delivering some sort of evocative impact… but not Juju. While Juju blatantly borrows from the best in the biz, it's impressive how high the quality is in this indie adventure. By no means is it perfect or revolutionary, but what's here is highly enjoyable, easily recommendable, and darn good-looking. Because the entire game can be played in two-player co-op, and because there are difficulty options welcoming of all skill levels, Juju is a great purchase for kids and families that like to play together. It's one of the season's biggest downloadable surprises.

  • Excellent local co-op with drop-in/drop-out mechanics, making it ideal for family play and accessible for young children.
  • Simple, responsive controls and forgiving difficulty with well-designed levels and enjoyable boss fights that offer a relaxing and fun platforming experience.
  • Gameplay is very simple and slow-paced, lacking challenging or fresh platforming mechanics, which may bore experienced or older players.
  • Bonus levels and hidden portal events are repetitive and can become tedious, with limited retry options causing frustration especially for younger players.
  • Some issues with camera behavior and occasional screen effects that can be overwhelming; also, the game's length and replayability are somewhat limited.
  • music

    17 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally praised as pleasant, fitting well with the cute visuals and overall atmosphere. While some note the soundtrack is enjoyable and smooth, a few mention it could be more varied, with some tracks repeating but not becoming annoying. Overall, the soundtrack is seen as a strong and charming element of the experience.

    • “The soundtrack is like butter for the ears, if butter would be nice in the ears.”
    • “The music is lovely and fits well with the game.”
    • “This is a fun platformer, with entertaining elements, great environments, good music, and fun design.”
    • “Music-wise, it could do better.”
    • “Seems it's the only thing on YouTube OST-wise.”
    • “While I've heard the same music being played over again, it doesn't hinder or get annoying.”
  • gameplay

    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is simple yet well-executed, focusing on crystal collection and hidden items across beautifully designed and varied levels. Its forgiving co-op mode offers seamless drop-in/out mechanics and support for less skilled players, though some levels show inconsistent difficulty and co-op design flaws. Overall, the engaging mechanics and diverse worlds create a pleasurable experience suitable for players of all ages.

    • “Its simplicity won't be for everyone, as the core gameplay involves clearing a stage with as many crystals as possible (a la Rayman Origins and Legends), as well as finding hidden items throughout the stage.”
    • “It has a great co-op mode, with an easy drop-in and drop-out mechanic. It is very forgiving, allowing a player to rely on their partner to solve challenging stages by putting them in a bubble to be dragged along until they feel comfortable joining again.”
    • “There are 4 different worlds, and in each level you encounter new enemies, traps, platforming concepts, and gameplay mechanics.”
    • “The only real con I found to be kinda off-putting is Juju's rather inconsistent difficulty, with some of the later levels and bosses being somewhat easy compared to their predecessors, and some parts of the game feeling like they were developed with co-op as an afterthought or not properly taken into account—especially in the bonus levels with autoscrolling mechanics. It can lead to one player setting the tone and the other often following in a protective bubble, mainly due to slight missteps, skill differences, or the sometimes wonky camera.”
    • “Its simplicity won't be for everyone, as the core gameplay involves clearing a stage with as many crystals as possible (à la Rayman Origins and Legends) as well as finding hidden items throughout the stage.”
    • “The levels are all very beautifully designed, with varying, distinct and colorful themes, cleverly overshadowing the fact that the gameplay itself is rather basic—not meant in a diminishing way at all; all of it feels very well implemented and well put together.”
  • graphics

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are praised for their vibrant, colorful, and adorable visuals, creating a charming and casual-friendly atmosphere. The art style is reminiscent of classic titles like Donkey Kong Country, enhancing the overall enjoyable and relaxing experience, especially in co-op play.

    • “The graphics are absolutely beautiful, full of vibrant colors.”
    • “Despite it bringing nothing extraordinary new or challenging to the table, it manages to combine a delightful setting and cute graphics with all the existing tropes of the genre in a very satisfying and casual friendly way - especially if you play in co-op.”
    • “This game is really good, nice colorful graphics, I played it as an adult and had a good time; it's just a chill easy time, for me, it's reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country.”
  • story

    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story follows Juju and Peyo as they embark on a quest to save Juju's father, Jambee, and battle the evil Bat, featuring engaging narrative elements centered around occult rituals. The game offers a good story mode playable in single player or local co-op.

    • “Help Juju and his fellowship Peyo in their quest to save Juju's father Jambee and fight the evil bat.”

The game offers strong replayability through various additional modes like time-trials, challenging boss fights, and a solid amount of collectibles and challenges. Its animated, colorful worlds and the option to play alongside friends further enhance the incentive to revisit levels.

    • “Furthermore, there are several additional modes like time-trial you can replay each level in, adding a layer of replayability to each of them.”
    • “Replayability: for sure you could sit with a friend and have them play this alongside you if you finished it by yourself.”
    • “Animated and colourful characters and worlds, boss fights are challenging and fun, solid amount of collectables and challenges add quite a lot of replay value.”
  • grinding

    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is considered tedious and unchallenging, especially for older players, making it a boring experience when attempting to collect all crystals.

    • “If you dare, you can try to get all crystals, but it can be really tedious.”
    • “Unfortunately, if you are older than 10, it's boring, unchallenging, and tedious.”
