The Coziest Open-World Game

- Beautiful graphics and detailed, gorgeous outfits with extensive customization options.
- Cozy, relaxing open world exploration with interesting puzzles, stories, and various activities such as fishing, bug catching, and housing.
- Fair and generous free-to-play elements making it possible to enjoy the game without spending money, with frequent updates and engaging community.
- The game suffers from poor optimization causing lag, long loading times, crashes, and issues with closing the game properly.
- Gacha system and monetization are aggressive and expensive, with many desirable outfits and color options locked behind heavy grind or paywalls.
- Storyline changes and retcons have alienated longtime fans and made the narrative confusing, combined with repetitive quests and limited endgame content.

The story in Infinity Nikki initially received praise for its charming, whimsical narrative and engaging characters, but after the 1.5 update, the entire original storyline was retconned, causing confusion, disappointment, and a loss of emotional connection among players. This overhaul introduced a more convoluted, high-stakes multiverse plot that many found less coherent and less appealing, especially since it replaced the well-loved introductory tutorial and sidelined established characters. While the game still offers a rich world and plenty of quests, the narrative direction has been inconsistent, with sparse main story updates, leading to frustration over the lack of meaningful progression and frequent bugs that further hinder the storytelling experience.
“The story is intriguing.”
“The main story quest is bland at times, easy to predict the way it's headed, but the animation is wonderful.”
“The story is amazing, the characters have depth, there's tons of mini games to keep you on your toes, and the outfits are absolutely beautiful!”
“They completely removed the original story and removed all motivation for the character to do what they do; don't pick this garbage up. The new player experience they have added is horrible as well, they just throw everything at you at once instead of easing players in naturally like with the original story.”
“I loved this game but after the retcon of the beginning and the decline of the main story, I am just heavily disappointed.”
“The retcon of the original story is crazy work, where it was cute and wholesome, they went for an end of the world scenario with multiple possibilities (to introduce the co-op) and it just rubs me the wrong way that the magical star lady is brushing those worlds lost like 'oh well, we can just do over!' Never mind that they could have done so much with that story and slowly introduce it as a major turning point for Nikki, then we may have had seen her grow more in character and really feel for her.”
Infinity Nikki review — Only the start of the ball
While its gacha mechanics feel predatory, Infinity Nikki is a blast in most other aspects. Finding and dressing up in various outfits is fun, and the open world has a ton of variety. The story is surprisingly interesting too, even if it has a few too many lulls. Infinity Nikki feels like the ultimate dress up game, and it’s only going to get bigger from here.

100%Infinity Nikki
Infinity Nikki, even in this early phase of its lifespan, is utterly essential – assuming you can stomach the twee, whimsical tone to it all. Its cosy vibes will prove an acquired taste, but its attention to detail and commitment to keeping the player engaged during every minute of exploration is impeccable. Moreover, its visual presentation is up there alongside the best you’ll find on PS5 – an extraordinary achievement for a free-to-play game that also miraculously runs on mobile. Some control quandaries and an abundance of proper nouns prevent it from achieving perfection, but these are minor blemishes on an otherwise outstanding experience.
