F1 22 Game Cover
Although slightly saddened by the omission of a story mode this time around, it’s more than made up for by the new vehicle physics. The concern of “F1 Life” having any bearing on gameplay being quashed makes F1 22 another flying lap for Codemasters.

The graphics in F1 22 have received mixed reviews, with many players noting that while the visuals are generally impressive and showcase detailed car models and tracks, they do not represent a significant leap from previous iterations, particularly F1 2021. Some users have praised the stunning graphics and immersive experience, especially with ray tracing, while others have criticized performance issues, blurriness in VR mode, and a lack of substantial improvements in overall graphical fidelity. Overall, the game is visually appealing but may require high-end hardware to fully enjoy its graphical capabilities without performance drawbacks.

    • “The graphics are stunning, showcasing the attention to detail in recreating real-life Formula 1 circuits and iconic racing cars.”
    • “Whether you're navigating the tight streets of Monaco or blazing through high-speed straights at Monza, the game's graphics and visual effects immerse you in the world of Formula 1 like never before.”
    • “The graphics are simply stunning, with meticulously detailed car models, intricately designed race tracks, and jaw-dropping weather effects that immerse players in the world of Formula 1 like never before.”
    • “Graphics-wise, little to no improvements from 2021.”
    • “The graphics haven't changed at all, still the same crappy graphics like in F1 21, but it has more personality and game details than previously.”
    • “The graphics in VR are just not good enough, which makes seeing brake points and apexes very hard.”

The stability of the game has been widely criticized, with numerous users reporting frequent crashes, freezes, and a plethora of bugs and glitches that significantly hinder gameplay. Many players express frustration over the game's performance, particularly in multiplayer and VR modes, where issues like audio glitches and AI behavior further detract from the experience. Despite some positive remarks about the game's fun aspects, the overwhelming consensus is that it remains a "buggy mess," making it difficult to recommend for purchase at full price.

    • “But otherwise, I like all aspects of the game, the progression, the AI competitors, and find it lots of fun, and not buggy at all.”
    • “It has a great community, great controller support, is bug-free, and most importantly, it is not made by maniacs who want to see the world burn.”
    • “Overall, the game runs great on my system (1660 Super, Ryzen 5 2600X, 8GB DDR4).”
    • “Returned to try the game a year and a half after purchase and it's still so buggy that it's too frustrating to even set it up to the point where I want to play it.”
    • “This game is a buggy mess, and every update creates more bugs.”
    • “The game is riddled with bugs, glitches, constantly crashing, audio cut in/out as well as VR being horribly optimized.”
  • gameplay332 mentions

The gameplay of F1 2022 has received mixed reviews, with some praising its smooth mechanics and realistic driving experience, while others criticize it for a lack of innovation and numerous bugs. Many players appreciate the balance between accessibility and depth, but express frustration over technical issues and the feeling that the game is a minor update from its predecessor, F1 2021. Overall, while the core gameplay mechanics are solid, the presence of glitches and a focus on cosmetic features detracts from the overall experience.

    • “The gameplay is smoother than a freshly paved racetrack.”
    • “From the exhilarating gameplay to the breathtaking visuals, this game delivers an immersive and unforgettable racing experience.”
    • “The driving mechanics in F1 22 are a perfect blend of realism and accessibility.”
    • “This game is by far the biggest pile of shit in my library, like a toxic ex I keep coming back for more just to get my ass slapped up by shit AI, mechanics, physics, and stroll. Would not recommend this game to anyone; finally plucked the courage to uninstall this and I'll come back in 2025.”
    • “The gameplay is clunky and buggy, with poor AI behavior and inconsistent physics that make it difficult to enjoy the game.”
    • “The game has a good concept with adding your own aspect and career to F1 instead of just having to control a fan favorite, but it has been poorly executed. The game has many issues with it, but the main issue is graphical bugs and mechanical issues that EA, of all companies, should know how to fix in a few small updates, but to this day the game is broken.”
  • optimization282 mentions

The optimization of F1 22 has received overwhelmingly negative feedback, with players reporting significant performance issues, including frequent stuttering, crashes, and poor VR support. Many users noted that even high-end systems struggle to maintain stable frame rates, and the game often feels unplayable due to these technical problems. While some players experienced satisfactory performance after extensive tweaking, the overall consensus is that the game is poorly optimized and riddled with bugs, making it a frustrating experience for many.

    • “You can fine-tune your car to your heart's content, tweaking everything from the engine performance to the tire pressure.”
    • “The game is overall smoother than last year and more optimized, the new cars look and sound wonderful, especially after the recent livery update.”
    • “I enjoy many sim racing titles; AC, ACC, iRacing, rFactor2, AMS2 - F1 22 plays brilliantly for me in VR (Valve Index) on an RTX 3080, i9 10900K - yes that's a beefy machine, but I get similar (if not better) performance out of F1 22 as I do with the other titles.”
    • “The game is riddled with bugs, glitches, constantly crashing, audio cut in/out as well as VR being horribly optimized.”
    • “This game is a stuttering mess, to the point where my computer is bogging down and the LEDs on my keyboard are freezing.”
    • “Even with settings turned to ultra low, DLSS set to performance, and resolution scaling set to as low as 20%, the game stutters constantly and struggles to maintain even 45 fps.”
  • story246 mentions

The story aspect of the game has received significant criticism for its absence, with many players expressing disappointment over the removal of the "Braking Point" story mode from previous installments. While some players appreciate the focus on gameplay and multiplayer, others miss the narrative elements that provided context and engagement in earlier versions. Overall, the lack of a dedicated story mode has left many feeling that the game is less immersive and compelling compared to its predecessors.

    • “The addition of the 'braking point' story mode further enhances the single-player experience, allowing players to embark on a compelling journey through the world of Formula 1.”
    • “The 'braking point' story mode in F1 2021 may have been a bit on the clichéd side, but it was still an interesting way to play through an F1 career.”
    • “I would like to see the game bring back the 'braking point' mode as that gave a short storyline to differ from the usual career/multiplayer modes.”
    • “Compared to F1 2021, which was the first time that the F1 game series had its own story mode, F1 22 does not have this kind of mode. The series could have been better if the developers had included the sequel to the story presented in F1 2021.”
    • “The removal of the 'Braking Point' storyline for F1 21 is a blow, as it was a good way to get into the sport. This time there’s no story mode at all, meaning solo players will have to make do with the existing career mode.”
    • “Codemasters decided to remove the story mode in this year's installment and it was a bit disappointing. I miss the story that previous games had in the past.”
  • music133 mentions

The music in F1 22 has received mixed reviews, with some players enjoying the new soundtrack and its integration of licensed tracks, while others criticize it for feeling out of place or reminiscent of other EA titles like FIFA. Many appreciate the option to customize the music selection, but there are complaints about the quality and repetitiveness of certain tracks, leading some to prefer the previous games' soundtracks. Overall, while the soundtrack has its fans, it also has detractors who find it lacking in coherence with the racing theme.

    • “The soundtrack is a symphony of engine roars and screeching tires.”
    • “The music has also been changed, and now uses real music, unlike the custom-made music from the previous releases.”
    • “I really just want to say that the game is nice, but the soundtrack slaps so hard that it's amazing!”
    • “The stupid menu music which plays while driving.”
    • “70% of the songs are weird (not to my taste) or just so bad.”
    • “The music selection is awful.”
  • monetization127 mentions

The monetization strategy in the latest F1 game has drawn significant criticism, with many reviewers labeling it a blatant cash grab driven by EA's influence. Players express frustration over the prevalence of microtransactions, particularly for cosmetic items and the poorly received "F1 Life" mode, which feels more like an advertisement than a meaningful addition to the gameplay. Overall, the invasive monetization tactics detract from the gaming experience, leading to a perception that the game prioritizes profit over player satisfaction and development.

    • “I haven't spent a cent on a single in-game purchase in the years that they've been in the game.”
    • “You have the option of purchasing things with your own money, but you unlock plenty of on-track and F1 life items just by playing the game naturally, so purchasing pitcoins for in-game purchases is completely your call.”
    • “Overall as a Formula 1 and general racing fan I enjoy the game but you can tell EA has got their hands on the monetization in this franchise.”
    • “F1 Life is just an excuse to get people to buy more currency because, as we know, EA is trustworthy and would never want to get a cash grab off of a sports game.”
    • “Ultimately it seems as if EA focused on bringing in extra 'F1 Life' customization, collaborating with and advertising big fashion brands in the hopes of making you pay real money for a virtual hat that you will see for 10 seconds once every 2 hours in the game, rather than improving the player's experience and developing a game that their customers want to play.”
    • “This game is going to be great, but in typical EA fashion, it's loaded with microtransactions, and it doesn't work right out of the box.”
  • humor46 mentions

The humor in the game is largely derived from its numerous bugs and glitches, which players find unintentionally amusing, such as AI mishaps and absurd physics. While some enjoy the comedic aspects of racing with friends, many feel that the game's issues detract from the overall experience, making it less funny than previous installments. Overall, the humor is a mix of frustration and laughter, with players often finding themselves chuckling at the game's shortcomings rather than its intended comedic elements.

    • “Funny game, don't crash. I did going 250 mph and died quick as 10/10 would crash again.”
    • “If you like to fall off the chair laughing about supercar physics, this is your game.”
    • “I drive in funny circles for the fifth year in a row.”
    • “Co-op is everything but not funny; it's full of bugs and missing features like skipping time. If you crash at the beginning of the session, you must wait 15 minutes.”
    • “Not funny as it used to be.”
  • grinding44 mentions

The reviews overwhelmingly indicate that grinding in the game is excessively time-consuming, with many players humorously suggesting that it requires "a second life" to manage. While some players find the grinding tedious and repetitive, others note that certain aspects, like career progression, may not feel grindy at all. Overall, the consensus leans towards grinding being a significant and often frustrating component of the gameplay experience.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “A bit grindy... sometimes.”
    • “Fun with friends, not grindy, not repetitive like any RPG games.”
    • “The pass, and the need to constantly be online to verify and 'reward' you for grinding around the pass... this basically bloats up the game and slows down the loading process of every 'next screen'.”
    • “I've been grinding my career on the new team setting and it's been a little disheartening, but real.”
    • “I can play the game for about 5 minutes before the audio begins to degrade and brings the game to a grinding halt.”
  • replayability20 mentions

Overall, the game's replayability is mixed; while some players find it infinitely replayable due to engaging career paths and enjoyable multiplayer experiences, others criticize the lack of depth in career mode and issues with multiplayer connectivity. The game is noted to be more playable than previous versions, with improvements that enhance enjoyment, but the absence of strong community support and engaging multiplayer options limits its long-term appeal for some players.

    • “The ability to forge a career path, negotiate contracts, and compete against legendary drivers adds depth and replayability to the game.”
    • “Still one of the most replayable racing games for solo players.”
    • “The absence of engaging multiplayer experiences and community support diminishes the game’s longevity and replayability.”
    • “The career mode is dull and repetitive, with little depth or replay value, and the multiplayer experience is marred by frequent connection issues and unbalanced matchmaking.”
    • “I enjoy the EA music that they brought in for the game; it makes the game seem a lot more replayable when you don't hear the same song over and over.”
  • emotional16 mentions

The emotional responses to the game are overwhelmingly negative, with players expressing deep frustration and disappointment due to aggressive AI, poor gameplay mechanics, and performance issues. Many users feel that their investment in the game was a mistake, leading to feelings of regret and a desire to erase their experience. However, there are also moments of genuine emotional connection, highlighting the game's potential for immersive experiences despite its flaws.

    • “This... wholesome, real, immersive moment that was so short meant so much.”
    • “Edit: it's been a few months now, I can see that I was quite emotional.”
    • “☐ heart-wrenching/tear jerkingly good”
