  • story
    999 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in "Defense Grid 2" has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it less engaging than its predecessor. While some appreciate the attempt to add depth through multiple AI characters and humorous dialogue, others criticize it as convoluted, poorly written, and distracting from the gameplay. Overall, the narrative is seen as a secondary element, with many players opting to focus on the tower defense mechanics rather than the story itself.

    • “The game's campaign is a testament to its excellence, offering a rich and immersive story that unfolds across multiple missions.”
    • “Fantastic tower defense game, builds on the achievements of the first installment and continues the complementary interplay between the supporting characters that really adds flavor to the maps and provides a story-wrapper to the fundamental tower defense gameplay.”
    • “The storyline is amusing and well voiced, so no problems there.”
    • “I'm not sure what happened during development, but this plot is half-baked and the voice-overs are, for the most part, a disjointed mess of incoherent filler.”
    • “The story of this one is awful not the premise of the story itself but you end up with so many voices talking and most of it is nonsense that contributes nothing to this game.”
    • “Don't pay attention to the story, though - it's unintelligible half the time and is pretty much rubbish.”
  • graphics
    583 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in "Defense Grid 2" are generally considered an improvement over its predecessor, featuring cleaner and more colorful visuals, though opinions vary widely. While many players appreciate the enhanced detail and artistic design, some criticize the contrast and clarity, making it difficult to distinguish between elements during gameplay. Overall, the graphics are described as solid but occasionally overwhelming, with some users noting performance issues on lower-end systems.

    • “Amazing gameplay and excellent graphics make it a standout.”
    • “The graphics are clean, detailed, and elegant; gameplay is interesting and progressive levels give you cause to think about strategy whilst not being so hard as to irritate.”
    • “Absolutely gorgeous graphics in every detail from the towers to the maps to the backdrops.”
    • “The graphics are pretty but the contrast is very poor in some areas, making it difficult to determine what the game is actually portraying.”
    • “The ui design is horrible, the graphics look somehow worse than in dg1 and the towers are not as visceral and satisfying as in dg1.”
    • “I felt very disappointed and actually exited the game without beating the first mission... the ui is awful.. controller support is garbage and you cannot even move the camera with any of the sticks you must bring the cursor to the edge just to scoot the camera around... wasting tons of time and making things a chore.. its hard to tell when enemies grab the cores because the graphics in this game are worse than the first one.”
  • gameplay
    470 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay in "Defense Grid 2" retains the core mechanics of its predecessor while introducing new elements like boost towers and varied enemy types, enhancing strategic depth and replayability. However, some players feel that the game lacks significant innovation, making it feel more like an expansion than a true sequel, with a potential for repetitiveness despite its numerous modes and challenges. Overall, while the gameplay is solid and addictive, it may not offer enough new content for those seeking a departure from the original experience.

    • “The game's core mechanics are still enjoyable, with the goal of protecting your core's base from hordes of invading aliens using an array of towers and upgrades.”
    • “With its deep strategic gameplay, captivating level design, and wealth of content, it stands head and shoulders above the competition.”
    • “At its core, 'dg2' is a masterclass in tower defense gameplay.”
    • “Dg2 feels like an expansion more than a sequel and really does not advance the gameplay in any meaningful way.”
    • “Overall it feels that while some new mechanics were added, actual diversity of solutions and viable gameplay choices have narrowed.”
    • “The campaign was utterly boring and cliched and the new mechanics are more annoying than adding anything new to the game.”
  • replayability
    175 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game boasts a strong replayability factor, with numerous difficulty levels, various game modes, and unlockable perks that keep players engaged. Many users appreciate the challenge and variety offered by different maps and community-created content, although some express disappointment with certain modes feeling repetitive. While most reviews highlight the game's replay value, a few critics note that it may not live up to the near-infinite replayability claims, particularly when compared to its predecessor.

    • “On the other hand, the game's replay value is still very strong, with multiple difficulty levels and special challenges to keep players engaged.”
    • “Good gameplay, and an insane amount of replayability, due to the high number of tactic possibilities, available in-game mods and difficulty levels.”
    • “There are plenty of levels to explore, replay value with multiple game modes and difficulties.”
    • “But unfortunately, it's awfully lacking in replayability and additional content.”
    • “Unfortunately, the replay value is low and my desire to continuously redo each level in the different modes is non-existent.”
    • “Overall, it's a 5/10 game because the replay value is just not there, which is a shame as I loved the original.”
  • humor
    70 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players enjoying the quirky banter and well-voiced AI characters, finding it fun and occasionally hilarious. However, many critics feel that the humor often falls flat, becoming tiresome or cringeworthy, especially when the game tries too hard to be funny. Overall, while there are moments of clever dialogue and amusing scenarios, the humor does not consistently resonate with all players.

    • “On top of this, we find a sometimes hilarious story told by a bunch of misfit AIs.”
    • “The banter between the various AI personalities is also done very well, and flavors the action nicely with humor, drama, and a really good bit of mystery.”
    • “Script and especially voice acting are top notch and often absolutely hilarious.”
    • “Not funny, just cringeworthy.”
    • “At the beginning and end of every mission they spend upwards of five minutes rambling about desperately unfunny nonsense and leading up to a single, painfully predictable plot twist on the last level (the alien rune text even gives it away almost immediately!) The mission briefings can all be summarized as follows: 'blah blah blah I love the mooooon!' 'I know this sounds weird, but we really need to have a talk about raspberries.' 'Wow, isn't it weird how corrupted and single-minded we're all becoming?'”
  • optimization
    60 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received mixed reviews, with some players noting stable performance and good frame rates under certain conditions, while others report significant stuttering, crashes, and overheating issues, particularly on lower-end systems. Many users express frustration over the game's poor optimization, especially for a tower defense title, and the interface being more suited for controllers rather than keyboard and mouse. Overall, while there are elements of good optimization, the game struggles with performance consistency across various hardware setups.

    • “It has versatile level options and space for creativity, good optimization, and excellent balance.”
    • “The gameplay is much the same as the first, with the nice optional feature of backspacing to checkpoints to try different optimizations.”
    • “All seems highly polished, and absolutely loving the steam friend performance trackers as well.”
    • “My big complaint is the game seems extremely poorly optimized and overheating is a huge issue and it crashes often (pretty much every time you hit restart level).”
    • “Performance is absolute garbage even on the lowest settings and lowest resolution; the game jumps around like crazy, which makes no sense considering that it really isn't an intensive game at all. My Mac can run things like Civilization just fine, but I really don't know what I am supposed to do.”
    • “That is simply unacceptable for any game to have that poor a performance level, even if we ignore how ludicrous it is for a tower defense game to lag this badly.”
  • music
    56 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players praising its motivational and thematic fit, while others find it boring or annoying. Many appreciate the ability to customize audio settings, allowing them to mute the game and play their own music if desired. Overall, the soundtrack is seen as decent but not universally loved, with some longing for the original score.

    • “In addition to the high quality of the gameplay, the music, sound, and speech are all equally excellent.”
    • “The music is motivational and uplifting, with brassy fanfares pushing the player onwards.”
    • “With memorable characters, stunning visuals, and a soundtrack that sets the perfect tone, 'dg2' pulls players into its world and never lets go.”
    • “The music is still extremely boring, but I was able to pause the game and use the Windows key to successfully minimize the game and play other music in a media player on the desktop without causing Defense Grid 2 any problems when I returned to it.”
    • “The music made me feel like I was in some overpriced restaurant; I turned that off right away.”
    • “I just think the graphics are not very catchy, the music is rather annoying, and there is no engagement in any story so far.”
  • stability
    40 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability has received mixed reviews, with many players reporting significant bugs, graphical glitches, and freezing issues that hinder gameplay. While some users found it well-polished and enjoyable, others experienced persistent problems, particularly in multiplayer and user interface elements. Overall, it appears that the game may require further optimization and patches to address these stability concerns.

    • “It's well polished and runs great.”
    • “I give this an 8.2/10. It's bug-free for me, looks nice, plays well, has a story/reason for doing things, and there is co-op if you would like to do that.”
    • “The game freezes for a good quarter of a second every single second, making it basically unplayable.”
    • “The AI is buggy (I could get all the aliens to spin in the same spot on 14 - green towers only - even though they had a clear path), the game crashes, and the smooth, polished feel of the first game is not currently present.”
    • “Your going to want to wait on this one for a while after release... glitches, bugs, and a ton of issues currently.”
  • grinding
    30 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviews indicate that the grinding aspect of the game is a significant point of contention, with many players finding it tedious and uninteresting. While some appreciate the challenge and fun of the tower defense mechanics, the repetitive nature of grinding for upgrades and the lack of strategic depth detracts from the overall experience. Players who dislike grinding are particularly advised to avoid this game, as it quickly becomes monotonous despite its initial appeal.

    • “The loadout and leveling progression system just takes away from the experience and adds uninteresting grinding.”
    • “This game is not as advertised; it isn't fast, it's slow and tedious. The tutorial does nothing, and immediately after 5 minutes, I wanted a refund.”
    • “Not recommended, even if you're a die-hard tower defense fan - and by God, I am, but this one can't hold my interest; it turns grindy really quickly.”
  • monetization
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization strategy of the game has drawn criticism for the introduction of microtransactions, which some players feel detracts from the overall experience, especially given the absence of ads. Users express frustration that instead of addressing existing issues, the developers opted to implement additional paid features, reminiscent of past practices from the studio known for aggressive monetization in previous titles.

    • “And no ads to get in the way.”
    • “No ads to pester you about buying this to make the game challenging or you have to have this item to go any further.”
    • “From the beta, it appears like a shinier version of the original with microtransactions.”
    • “This shouldn't be shocking as this is the studio/publisher who made Payday 2 an unbearable cash grab: 505 Games.”
    • “It looks like instead of fixing this debilitating issue, they were busy adding microtransactions.”
    • “Nevertheless, if I pay money for a game, I assume that it works without having to click through a mess of ads that actually do not work.”
  • atmosphere
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is generally described as lacking the charm and depth of its predecessor, leaning more towards a "rated G" vibe rather than a thrilling sci-fi experience. While it introduces new features and options, many players feel it fails to capture the engaging atmosphere that made the first game memorable, often comparing it unfavorably to earlier installments.

    • “Great game, not as atmospheric as the first but more options.”
    • “It is a 'rated G' kind of atmosphere rather than a sci-fi thriller experience.”
    • “It just lacks the charm and atmosphere of its predecessor.”
    • “A couple new features that make it somewhat different, but can't quite catch the atmosphere and charm of the first game of the series.”
    • “This could have been the Portal 2 of TDS, but the pacing and atmosphere of the first gets replaced with farce as a bunch of stupid new AIs run around drunk.”
  • emotional
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional impact of the sequel is diminished compared to the original, with many players feeling disconnected due to an overwhelming number of characters and a lackluster plot that doesn't showcase the voice actors' talents. While the game features improved mechanics and visuals, these enhancements do not compensate for the emotional depth that players found in the first installment.

  • character development
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the sequel expands on the original story but is perceived as less compelling, with some reviewers noting that it undermines certain aspects of character growth from the first game. Despite these criticisms, the narrative remains engaging enough to hold interest.

    • “It expands on the story from the first one, although it feels less compelling and actually slightly ruins a bit of character development from the original.”
