Cities: Skylines

I love this game and I really hope that it continues being great but I don’t think the console is the place for it. It’s simply too slow to keep interest as it is and efforts to increase the speed might mean a decrease in detail or performance.

    • “The only real gripe is that some mechanics are locked behind dlc, but this game benefits from a wonderful modding community that can ease that.”
    • “The gameplay is very weak, and there is no real challenge.”
    • “The core gameplay mechanics are overly simplistic, I felt like I had bought a 3D graphic city model builder instead of a simulation game.”
  • graphics
    3,460 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in Cities: Skylines are widely praised for their beauty and detail, with many players noting the game's vibrant aesthetics and immersive environments. While some users mention occasional graphical glitches and performance issues, particularly on lower-end systems, the overall visual experience is considered superior to that of previous city-building games like SimCity. The extensive modding community further enhances the graphics, allowing for significant customization and improvements.

    • “The graphics are stunning, and the attention to small details like traffic flow, citizen needs, and city aesthetics is incredibly impressive.”
    • “The attention to detail in the game's graphics, coupled with a beautifully rendered world, allows you to create a city that is not only functional but visually stunning.”
    • “The graphics are beautiful, the sound and music fitting, and the community is absurdly talented and full of free custom content/mods to choose from.”
    • “The graphics are aging and they were more cartoonish in the beginning.”
    • “The graphics in cities: skylines are nothing short of breathtaking.”
    • “The graphics are not the best, but the overall experience is worth the purchase.”
  • optimization
    944 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The optimization of "Cities: Skylines" has received mixed reviews, with many players highlighting significant performance issues, especially in larger cities and when using multiple mods. While some users report smooth gameplay on high-end systems, others experience lag and stuttering even on recommended hardware, indicating that the game is not well-optimized for lower-end machines. Overall, while the game offers a rich city-building experience, its performance can be heavily impacted by city size and mod usage, leading to a need for powerful hardware to maintain a satisfactory experience.

    • “Despite some performance concerns and a learning curve for newcomers, the game's strengths in customization and responsiveness to player feedback solidify its place as a modern classic in the city-building genre.”
    • “The game provides smooth performance, even with large and complex cities with thousands of inhabitants.”
    • “This game is surprisingly well optimized for how big your cities tend to get.”
    • “Don't bother with Cities: Skylines 2, it's an unfinished, unoptimized mess.”
    • “Unoptimized garbage heap of a game that looks like it came out in 2010 yet requires a NASA PC to be able to run, and that's just without mods, which you will most certainly need if you want your towns and cities to resemble anything close to a real city with believable districts and networks.”
    • “The only downside is performance when your city gets large, but that is to be expected for a game this detailed.”
  • music
    843 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in "Cities: Skylines" has received mixed reviews from players. While many appreciate the soothing and atmospheric soundtrack that complements the gameplay, others find it repetitive and lacking in variety, often leading them to turn it off in favor of their own playlists. Additionally, the availability of various radio station DLCs adds some diversity, but opinions on their value vary, with some players feeling that the music packs are overpriced for the limited content they provide.

    • “The soundtrack is soothing and matches the game's calming pace, while the sound effects and animations breathe life into your city.”
    • “The graphics are beautiful, the music is relaxing, making it a great game to play for hours on end.”
    • “The game's soundtrack is also noteworthy, providing a soothing and atmospheric backdrop that complements the gameplay perfectly.”
    • “The music is very repetitive in the base game.”
    • “The only downside is the in-game music is incredibly irritating, but mute the music and put your own on, and it's great.”
    • “The music gets stale and repetitive quickly, and the sound effects are pretty irritating with the constant chirping, sirens, etc.”
  • story
    707 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The reviews overwhelmingly indicate that "Cities: Skylines" lacks a traditional story or narrative structure, with many users noting it as a sandbox game focused on city-building rather than storytelling. While some players appreciate the freedom to create their own narratives through city management, the absence of missions or a guided storyline is a common point of criticism. Overall, the game is recognized for its engaging gameplay mechanics rather than a compelling plot.

    • “The makers' attention to detail is also incredible; each individual building, pedestrian, and car comes with its own story, and everything is really wonderfully integrated.”
    • “Every brushstroke on the landscape, every policy enacted, every district crafted, tells a story.”
    • “You can literally click on an individual human in your city (even a dog), and there is a story for that person.”
    • “Cities: Skylines does not have a traditional narrative or story mode.”
    • “There is no actual objective, no missions, just a pure sandbox play.”
    • “The ony drawback is that it is only a building game, void of any kind of story or mission goal.”
  • replayability
    514 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Cities: Skylines is widely praised for its exceptional replayability, largely attributed to its extensive modding community and the variety of downloadable content (DLC) available. Players appreciate the game's open-ended nature, allowing for countless creative possibilities in city-building, which keeps the experience fresh and engaging over time. While some users note that the base game can become repetitive without mods or DLC, the overall consensus is that the game's depth and community support provide nearly infinite replay value.

    • “This game is the definition of replayability.”
    • “The game's expansion packs and mod support further extend its replayability.”
    • “With endless possibilities, replay value is super high as long as you stay entertained by creating cities.”
    • “Sadly however it is heavily dependent on mods/DLCs to make it replayable, which causes a lot of crashes.”
    • “Not a lot of replay value and it seems like it is kind of designed to sink you in before hitting a boring block that can only be moved by more purchases.”
    • “Once you max out a single city, it's not that different creating a second city, so not much replay value there.”
  • stability
    480 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The stability of the game is a mixed bag, with many users reporting frequent bugs, crashes, and performance issues, particularly when using mods. While some players find it runs smoothly on lower-end systems and appreciate the modding community's efforts to address glitches, others express frustration over the game's tendency to freeze or become unplayable, especially in larger cities. Overall, while the game offers a fun city-building experience, players should be prepared for a significant amount of troubleshooting and potential instability.

    • “Amazing - runs great on macOS M1 Max, I have so much fun making cities.”
    • “The game runs great, even though it is quite old.”
    • “This game is completely bug free (so far), has the production value of a AAA studio, beautiful music, pretty graphics, mod support, extremely well optimized, and water physics.”
    • “Troubleshooting becomes the main focus, transforming the once dynamic experience into a tedious debugging process.”
    • “Game never launched after several hours of troubleshooting.”
    • “The game is a buggy mess (reportedly even without mods!), and with mods of course it's even worse.”
  • grinding
    410 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game is frequently described as tedious and time-consuming, with many players feeling that managing city growth, traffic, and infrastructure can become a chore, especially in the late game. While some find satisfaction in the detailed micromanagement and customization options, others express frustration with repetitive tasks and the need for extensive planning, often suggesting that mods can alleviate some of the grind. Overall, players recommend the game for its depth and creativity, but caution that it requires a significant investment of time and effort.

    • “A bit grindy sometimes.”
    • “I dunno what you're doing with your life if you aren't grinding this masterpiece of a game.”
    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “The gameplay felt kind of tedious and nothing I was doing felt very satisfying or interesting.”
    • “Once your cities get beyond a certain size, you'll need to start employing some strategies around policies and transport to stop your city from grinding to a halt and crumbling.”
  • humor
    263 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in this city-building game is widely appreciated, with players finding joy in the absurdities of city management, such as flooding cities with sewage or watching chaotic traffic patterns. Many reviews highlight the game's quirky in-game events, funny radio ads, and the comedic potential of disasters, making it a source of laughter even amidst challenges. While some feel it lacks the whimsical charm of older titles like SimCity, the overall consensus is that the game offers a delightful mix of humor and engaging gameplay.

    • “A beautiful city builder with a large number of expansions and a sense of humor.”
    • “It's a very funny game to play with friends.”
    • “The in-game jokes and situations are hilarious!”
    • “Paradox, it is not funny. Sort out your in-game bugs and fix them. I lost my amazing city, and one time I loaded my save game and there was a sign: 'object reference not set to an instance of an object.'”
    • “And street construction is not funny, because if you don't want to have rectangular roads, the tool that helps you edit the roads is not really pretty to use.”
    • “You're not funny!”
  • monetization
    214 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization strategy of the game has drawn significant criticism, with many players labeling it as a "cash grab" due to the excessive reliance on DLCs and the introduction of a launcher that bombards users with ads. While some DLCs are appreciated for enhancing gameplay, the overall sentiment is that the pricing and frequency of these expansions feel exploitative, detracting from the enjoyment of the core game. Additionally, concerns about data collection and advertising practices have further soured the experience for many players.

    • “No further in-game purchase or DLC!”
    • “No online requirement, no microtransactions, just pure enjoyment.”
    • “This game is what SimCity was meant to be but without EA (microtransactions).”
    • “Cities: Skylines 2 is just a bad cash grab; don't buy it.”
    • “The game now uses its own launcher which is full of ads for DLC and overpriced microtransactions.”
    • “The real issue is the monetization... be prepared to buy the game almost four times over to have the full experience.”
  • emotional
    68 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game is described as a profound journey, evoking a wide range of feelings from joy and pride in city-building to heartbreak over traffic issues and community struggles. Players express a deep attachment to their creations, often feeling nostalgic and emotionally invested, despite occasional frustrations with gameplay mechanics and DLC costs. Overall, the game successfully combines fun and emotional engagement, making it a memorable experience for many.

    • “It's an emotional rollercoaster, where the highs of a thriving city are matched only by the lows of your first major traffic gridlock.”
    • “Even through the emotional torture, I just can't help myself but fall deeper in love.”
    • “When you go to the first-person view and see your awfully designed, but still yours, city, it's priceless and heartwarming.”
  • atmosphere
    66 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its vibrant and immersive qualities, enhanced by detailed graphics, a soothing soundtrack, and a dynamic day/night cycle. Players appreciate the ability to customize their experience through various editors and mods, which further enrich the game's ambiance. However, some critiques mention a lack of charm in certain aspects, suggesting that while the atmosphere is generally strong, it can occasionally feel hollow or bland without modifications.

    • “The various neighborhoods, landscapes, and buildings are lovingly crafted, creating a vibrant atmosphere within the game world.”
    • “The game's soundtrack is also noteworthy, providing a soothing and atmospheric backdrop that complements the gameplay perfectly.”
    • “The atmosphere is very soothing and relaxing, the graphics are simple yet good-looking and the mechanics are everything you could ask for in a city builder sim.”
    • “Only big drawback is the total absence of any form of atmosphere or charm; it's really bland and soulless.”
    • “There comes a time when you're thousands of hours in when you have long got your money's worth and the atmosphere of the game feels hollow, almost liminal.”
    • “The few buildings that do provide this atmosphere are schools and parks; other than that, your city residents just merge into pretty looking condos, mansions, bungalows, and office buildings.”
  • character development
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The reviews indicate that the character design is a significant aspect of the game, showcasing unique and visually appealing characters that enhance the overall experience.
