The story of "Attack on Titan 2" closely follows the narrative of the anime's first two seasons, allowing players to experience it from the perspective of a custom character integrated into the main events. While the game offers emotional moments and character development through interactions and side missions, many players find the mission structure repetitive and the overall pacing uneven, particularly in the later stages. Despite some criticisms regarding the lack of significant changes to the original plot and occasional bugs, the game is praised for its engaging storytelling and the opportunity to alter character fates post-campaign.
“The story mode follows the narrative closely, offering a blend of intense action sequences and character-driven moments that deepen your connection to the world of Attack on Titan.”
“The character creator allows you to enter the story as your own person instead of only playing as established characters; the story also incorporates your created character in an interesting way.”
“The story is familiar to any AOT fan, but with a custom character inserted into the story about as seamlessly as could be accomplished.”
“The game makes you feel like these characters are a new part of the story, only for them to meet the exact same grisly fate they met in the show, and it hurts so much more in the game since you got the chance to know these characters, from their names and faces, to the smallest parts of their personalities.”
“The pacing can occasionally feel uneven, especially during extended periods of side missions.”

The gameplay in "Attack on Titan 2" is generally praised for its fast-paced and satisfying combat mechanics, particularly the use of omni-directional mobility gear, which allows players to feel like skilled members of the Survey Corps. However, many reviews note that the core gameplay loop can become repetitive and grindy over time, despite the fun interactions with characters and the engaging combat. Overall, while the gameplay is enjoyable and captures the essence of the anime, it may not offer enough variety to sustain long-term interest for all players.
“The gameplay is fast-paced and intense, with satisfying combat mechanics that make you feel like a skilled member of the Survey Corps.”
“It faithfully captures the essence of Attack on Titan's world while delivering thrilling gameplay and memorable moments.”
“The mechanics are easy to pick up but nuanced enough to really sink your teeth into before mastering, and there is plenty of learning curve to make skill matter quite a bit.”
“The gameplay is very repetitive at times.”
“The repetitive bad gameplay does not warrant the time to spend on grinding bullet sponge harder difficulties.”
“The gameplay is ultimately repetitive as all hell - there are only so many ways you can make slicing a nape super interesting though.”

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with many praising the faithful recreation of the anime's art style and detailed character models, while others criticize performance issues and outdated visuals. Although some players find the graphics enjoyable and immersive, particularly in cutscenes, others note significant frame rate drops and a lack of optimization, especially on lower-end hardware. Overall, while the graphics are generally considered adequate for an anime adaptation, there is a consensus that they could benefit from further enhancements.
“Graphically, the game does a commendable job of recreating the distinctive art style of the anime, with detailed character models and dynamic environments.”
“Graphically, the game achieves a remarkable balance between fidelity to the anime’s aesthetic and the immersive realism of its world.”
“The graphics are very nice, surprisingly similar to the anime's style.”
“I lowered the graphics settings to as low as they would go, lowered the screen resolution until I felt like I was watching a 2007 YouTube video, and after all that, I get a solid 30 fps.”
“The graphics are awful, the gameplay is mediocre at best, and the bosses just don't feel like they should be in an Attack on Titan game.”
“The graphics are less than subpar and look worse than 2012 games.”

The reviews highlight that the game features significant grinding, particularly for leveling characters, acquiring gear, and completing achievements, which can lead to a repetitive experience. While some players find the grinding enjoyable and rewarding, others criticize it as tedious and excessive, detracting from the overall fun. Overall, the game offers a mix of engaging gameplay and frustrating grind, appealing to fans of the genre but potentially overwhelming for casual players.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“A bit grindy sometimes.”
“Grinding: there is absolutely no grinding required to get value out of this game.”
“The game gets very repetitive and grindy because all you do is kill titans, but if you like killing titans then it's not too bad.”
“There is an ungodly amount of grinding you have to do, and now it's not just 'get every single weapon in the game', it's also spending 160 of the same exact mission to level all your friends to max, which adds up to about 10 hours of the exact same mission, over and over.”
“I beat the story in about 10 hours, did scouting missions in solo and with friends for about 12 hours, maxing out everyone's relationship took another 20 hours, and the rest of my 80+ hours of game time was a tedious grinding slog and an example of poor game design that made me hate this game.”

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with many players expressing disappointment over the absence of the original anime soundtrack, which is widely regarded as exceptional. While some appreciate the composed scores and find them suitable for gameplay, others criticize them as generic and repetitive, often opting to play the anime's OST instead for a more immersive experience. Overall, the soundtrack is seen as a significant missed opportunity, detracting from the game's potential.
“Sound design and music play crucial roles in this immersive experience.”
“The soundtrack, with its sweeping orchestral scores and intense battle themes, complements the epic scale of the encounters.”
“The accompanying soundtrack has music suitable for every mission, which really immerses you into the gameplay.”
“The control feels utterly inadequate, and the music does not originate from the anime.”
“It's a huge waste to see the game having to make do with a generic OST that really wants to be similar to Hiroyuki Sawano's work, but just isn't allowed to.”
“The music isn't Hiroyuki Sawano's, but it's fine as background music.”

The optimization of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players reporting significant performance issues, including low frame rates and lag, particularly on lower-end hardware. While some users noted improvements over the previous installment, others experienced frustrating glitches and slow menu navigation, indicating that the game may require extensive tweaking to run smoothly. Overall, while there are instances of good performance, the consensus leans towards the game being poorly optimized, especially in crowded scenarios and with certain hardware configurations.
“Unlike the first game, AOT 2 introduces us to a 'create a character' optimization, allowing you to utilize every cast's skill abilities on your custom character.”
“The movement is fluid, the combat is fun, the game is optimized well, and there is plenty of content to play through.”
“I don't have an incredible PC, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050, but the performance is excellent thus far.”
“The name of the game is misspelled, it should actually be Farming Simulator 2019 Titan Edition. It's very badly optimized; the missions or dire eliminations don't start until the dialogue ends, so sometimes you have to wait and not do anything for 30 seconds. The only two difficulties are hard or being able to complete the hardest levels without trying. Most materials are completely useless unless you want to complete the gallery. The best skills in the whole game are locked in the DLC, and some of the requirements to get SS ranks are ridiculous. The character episode modes are boring and mostly not animated, and there is no reason to play with any other character other than the starting one.”
“No matter the performance I ran the game in, my frame rates remained at 8 to 10 fps.”
“It's a waste of money for what you get out of it, and the bad performance issues with the game.”

The game's stability has been widely criticized, with numerous reports of bugs, glitches, and AI issues that can disrupt gameplay, particularly during escort missions and titan encounters. While some players found enjoyment in the core mechanics despite these problems, many expressed frustration over the frequency and severity of the bugs, leading to a mixed reception regarding overall stability. Overall, while the game offers fun and engaging content, its technical issues significantly detract from the experience.
“I 100% recommend it; a few minor story and animation details aside, it is 100% worth the money and even runs great with my integrated graphics, which is saying something due to the size of some of the maps.”
“That said, it’s very good, pretty much bug-free and quite enjoyable. I’ve pumped 100+ hours into this game just messing around as a titan shifter and having fun.”
“Fortunately, the game actually runs great, with FPS drops being rare and only ever happening when the screen was covered with thirty soldiers flying around.”
“The game isn't bad, but it's kind of buggy and it didn't auto-save even though it told me it did and now I have to do the mission again and I am going to uninstall after playing for two hours...”
“There is this one part where you escort horses from one place to another but the horses scatter and the game glitches, making you unable to complete the mission.”
“Be aware that the multiplayer options border on false advertising; it's buggy as hell, extremely unreliable, and you pretty much have to solo the game to unlock the ability to coop it in any meaningful way.”

“The way gameplay is in here, I feel no replay value.”

“As an AOT fan, I absolutely loved the incorporation and character development of the player throughout the story.”
“It's basically just a ton of extra character development, and it's great watching as they warm up to you and become friends.”
“I cannot wait for a full game either for Season 4 or a whole new game for all seasons, with more complex character development and where the actions and performance actually influence the overall opinion of the character towards the player.”

It may be an improvement over the first in nearly every way, but Attack on Titan 2 fails to feel unique. Playing as your own character is nice, but this sequel ends up as a very similar package to its predecessor.
